the BEST advice is:
in the shower comb out your hair after shampoo and with conditioner in the hair, then rinse well.
then I suggest dividing the hair in to ponytails and twirling each tail tight and then twirl together and rubberband the hair at the bottom.
THIS WILL HELP!
my daughter has very thick hair and it is so smooth since doing this and using the Sunsilk anti poof shampoo and conditionair

My girls all have fine and thick hair, down to their waists.
(And yes, it can be fine and thick... cosmetology training 101 from 20+ years ago. LOL)
What we do is brush their hair out well and pull it back into a pony tail at the nape of their neck and secure it with a soft scrunchy (this leaves no rubberband/elastic marks and is soft to sleep on). In the mornings, they just slide the scrunchy off, rebrush and they're ready to go.

Ive always been told by hairdressers that using any rubber bands etc in your hair overnight (like in ponytails) causes breakage and split ends.theyve told me never to wear a ponytail to bed. a braid is ok because thats how they wore it to bed in the 1800s early 1900s.also like someone else suggested a satin pillowcase is best for any hair(not just extensions) because the satin lets you hair move freely more than a regular pillowcase.if its that much of a bother Id honestly cut it but thats just me i donated my hair to locks of love last year (it was down past my butt-had it cut to my chin) its now down past my armpits.I sometimes braid mine but when I do i use coated elastics.

another vote for braids....lol....my hair is past my bum and i have to braid it or it gets horrid rats right at the hair line in the back. I will usually put it into 2 braids as i still get those darn rats at the back of my head with 1 braid especially if i am restless. BTW my hair is fine and straight and thicker in the back.

You need to put your hair in a braid each night before you go to bed. or you can take pony tail holders and put one in where you would do a low pony tail and then one down the tail and one at the bottom.

This sounds old fashioned:
Mine is 1/3 way down my back, I put mine in curlers every night or it is a mess of tangles in the morning.
Braiding would also work.
What we ladies do for beauty! And less pain with the detangling!
