Lots of Trash at Jersey Shore Cleanup
Lots of Trash at Jersey Shore Cleanup
Mon Apr 24, 1:36 PM ET
SANDY HOOK, N.J. - What a haul: 20,790 plastic caps and lids, 13,454 cigarette butts, 1,381 toys and 570 shotgun shells.
Those were the most common items in the 21 tons of debris picked up off New Jersey beaches and out of waterways last year during Clean Ocean Action's annual cleanups.
The Sandy Hook-based nonprofit is forecasting a surge in cigarette-related trash this year because of a new indoor smoking ban.
"With the smokers being put outdoors and hanging around these establishments, there's a likelihood more cigarette butts will end up on our streets and sidewalks and washed into storm drains and into our waterways," said Kari Jermansen, outreach director for the Sandy Hook-based nonprofit.
Clean Ocean Action stages the beach sweeps twice a year, marshaling more than 2,500 volunteers from schools, community groups and elsewhere to walk the New Jersey coastline, picking up trash by hand.
In addition to the plastic caps and cigarette butts, thousands of straws, soda bottles, plastic utensils, beverage cans, plastic shopping bags and pieces of glass were collected by volunteers.
This year's spring sweep is scheduled for April 29.

Re: Lots of Trash at Jersey Shore Cleanup
Thank you, Jolie Rouge! I found it very interesting. In fact you tend to find alot of stuff that I wouldn't have known or read about without you posting it. Keep up the good work.
In responce to that article. It is so sad to see what we are doing to our planet. Apparently most people don't care what kind of earth the next generations will have to live on. Think of your kids, grandkids, even greatgrandkids the next time you throw away something that can be recycled, or throw a cig butt out the car window, etc. I am no tree hugger, but I feel it is my duty to help keep this world livable for future children any way I can. Kudos to all those volunteers.

Re: Lots of Trash at Jersey Shore Cleanup
I find Jolies posts helpful a lot of times. I work an odd shift and a lot of things happen while both me and my husband are asleep. I know, that if I catch the tail end of some interesting story, that odds are that Jolie has posted them here and not have to wait around for the story to come up again.

Re: Lots of Trash at Jersey Shore Cleanup
I am a Jersey girl, living on the west coast and I, too, appreciate the post. It saddens me to read this, although I am not surprised. The Jersey shore used to be magnificently beautiful! Hope everyone chips in!

Well, I agree w/ you, even though I probably wouldn't have been so blunt about it... lol
Actually, this doesn't bother me, if I don't want to read it I don't have to open it... I only get annoyed when it is an especially long thread and I have to shuffle through all the articles to get to what ppl are actualy saying. At that point I just use the ignore feature until I am through w/ that particular thread, then I remove it. (and so it isn't mistaken as outright rudeness to Jolie, I do this a lot and not just w/ her, it all depends on the specific thread)

I don't think I was rude... but you know what they say about opinions.
