What Am I Supose To Do With My BBQ?

I live in an apartment complex and they just sent out flyers to all of us saying that on Dec. 1st we are no longer allowed to have BBQ's on our deck/patio's. There was a law or something passed saying that they are illegal because apparantly they cause a high number of fires every year. But I think it is up to apartment managers to enforce the rule if they chose. Well ours is going to.

What really upsets me is that Dh and I just bought a really nice BBQ this summer, spent alot of money on it so we could use it for years to come. Now what am I supose to do with it? Yeah, I know there is freecycle, but I hate to just give it away. I wish there was something like freecycle where you could sell stuff to local people.

Plus it is just not fair. We love BBQ-ing. I don't think we are allowed to even have the BBQ, even if we are not using it. I guess I could call the managers and check but I don't want to bring to their attention that we have one.

This just makes me so mad

Re: What Am I Supose To Do With My BBQ?

Most apartment buildings do not allow them...the last 3 apartments I had it was right in the lease...the DO cause a lot of fires.

Sorry!

Some people on our freecycle started a yahoo group for trading/selling because so many people kept trying to sell things on freecycle. Maybe you could start a sale/trade group for your city and let the freecyclers know its there? I know on our free group, you can't advertise, BUT you can have your site address in your signature. So maybe you could start the group then go to freecycle to give something away and put the new group addy in your siggy line

Sorry that you are having to deal with this. Its been the law here for as long as I could remember that we couldn't grill on patios. Do you guys have a central area in the courtyard that you could BBQ in? Thats what we used to do. The law here is that the BBQ's have to be so many feet from the bulidings (or thats what it was when I lived in one)

Re: What Am I Supose To Do With My BBQ?

This won't help, but maybe it will bring a smile to your face... my husband and I were stationed in Japan, and lived in a high rise apartment out "on the economy" (in town), which overlooked a major thoroughfare (in Japan, almost everything is a major thoroughfare, as this is a very land-limited country). Being BBQ-loving Americans, my husband would often BBQ on our small balcony. One night my husband was out cooking up a few steaks when we got a loud, insistent knock at the door. It was our Japanese manager (who spoke only a few words of English), and he said "Fi-yah" and pointed towards our balcony. We explained that no, it wasn't a fire, it was a bbq....Well, next thing you know, we've got a fire truck parked in front of the building, and 5 firemen in our tiny apartment with the fire hose and all the gear...apparently someone had seen the smoke, assumed it was a fire, and called the fire station. The firemen didn't believe we were bbq-ing, so they actually had to go look...."Oh, bahbehque, steaki"
Let me tell you, after that we made sure that we kept our fire REALLY small, and that the mgr knew when we were bbqing.
Best of luck with your grill...maybe you could list it in the paper for sale (our paper offers a free online service which has been very productive for us) and recoup some of your money....

Re: What Am I Supose To Do With My BBQ?

strange, do you live on the first floor? When I lived in a condo, people on the first floor were allowed to have one but not the other two floors, stupid! if the first floor lit on fire, the rest of the building would go up!
I didnt complain because I lived on the first floor....
is it all bbqs or just the charcoal kind?

Re: What Am I Supose To Do With My BBQ?

Is there a common area where you can still BBQ? I know most municipalities have laws governing multiple family dwellings and BBQ's within so many feet of the structure. Ask the management if there is still an area where you will be allowed to BBQ before you get rid of it.

Re: What Am I Supose To Do With My BBQ?

We're not allowed to bbq w/in 100 feet of any buildings on the property... which is basically their way of saying no bbqing at all cause there's buildings w/in 100 feet of every angle of the pool area, which, for us, is the only place we'd ever consider bbqing. So we have a very expensive grill that was given to us that has sat out there for 5 years and has never been used.

Re: What Am I Supose To Do With My BBQ?

I think it's a good idea to get rid of the BBQ's because of fire issues. But then again, the whole concept of a bunch of people you don't know all living in a bunch of boxes stacked on top of each other and paying to do so, always seemed scary to me. LOL
