What is this world coming to?

I live in a small town and every fall we have a festival that is quite large. It goes on for 1 week. They have a carnival, food stands,street-long craft sale, parade, etc.Well, the kids around here don't have school tomorrow because it's considered "kid's day" at the carnival.Today, for the first year I believe, the school right in town only went to school half a day. Most kids walk straight from school to the carnival all week anyway.Well,it seems someone found a kids backpack at the gazebo in the park-unattended.Whole town panicked and shut everything down.Carnival, stands, local businesses-everything.All the streets were immediately blocked off and detours were put up.Radio stations were saying that they were going to call in experts to "open the backpack".Rumors were that they were 99 percent sure it was a bomb.Well, they didn't wait for any experts. An hour and a half later, some brave soul opened the backpack and guess what.......some poor kid's probably gonna be in a lot of trouble for sitting his school things down and forgetting about them!Remember how it used to be when you found a purse, backpack, etc.?The first thing you did was what..........open it up to look for ID.Not anymore. What a shame.

Re: What is this world coming to?

Sorry, but that is how life is in Bush America. The government has done such a good job of scaring people that now, no one trusts anyone else.
A kid's backpack may contain a bomb in the middle east, or in New York City, but I doubt many terrorists are going to go to the trouble of planting bombs in the rural midwest.
But that is what happens when you spend three years crying wolf. People start believing the wolf is really around.

Not wanting to start an argument or anything, but sometimes I feel that if we are hit again, it will be in a small town environment. Face it, there is far more small towns than there are big cities. What better way to cause fear in a large number of Americans than by showing that just because you live in a small town doesn't mean that you are safe from terrorist attacks.

Re: What is this world coming to?

No, this is how life is in America...period. Not Bush America. Like I said in another post. People who get all riled up and call the precautions scare tactics, are the same people who, God forbid, something should happen would be yelling and screaming that the administration didn't do enough. Can't win for losing.

But in this day and age, and now that it has been shown that the US is not immune to attack, I believe the old adage of better safe than sorry is appropriate. And anyone who doesn't think it couldn't happen to their small town, will be the shocked person who tells the reporter on the evening CNN broadcast...I never thought it could happen here.

Re: What is this world coming to?

"where knowledge is folly, Ignorance is bliss." Welcome to life with terrorism. I want the kiddies amongst us to put on their thinking caps and remember that the twin towers were attacked the first time when Clinton was in office. Of course we won't mention Beirut or the Cole incident. For years people in Israel have had a "don't touch " mentality, but that's just cause people have been trying to kill them much longer than they've been trying to kill us. No one is crying wolf. The terrorist are real and they hate us. If the administration doesn't warn us and something happens then they are the bad guys. If they do warn us and nothing happens, then they are the bad guys.
While it is sad that we can't go back to post 9/11 we are safer because we haven't.

Re: What is this world coming to?

I don't think so. Terrorist attacks are all done for effect. If you strike a major city, the news media is already there. You get the instant effect from the maximum number of people. A strike on a town of 1,000 would not render that effect.
People got the wrong idea of the WTC attacks. They were not pulled off to cause large loss of loss. They were done for symbolic effect. If terrorists merely wanted to cause a large loss of life, they would have crashed airplanes into packed football stadium, or major freeway interchanges at rush hour.
That is what the kidnappings/beheadings are all about. The terrorists know that every person captured and killed will get across their message. That is why they don't do them in secret. If all the major news media of the world totally ignored the next incident, the terrorists would stop. Because they wouldn't be getting their message across.

"What does Bush have to do with some kid's backpack?"

You didn't read my response, did you? ???

It has NOTHING to do with "Bush America". It has to do with terrorists flying jet planes into our buildings, murdering thousands of people, and our nation trying desprately to keep us safe and prepared. "The Wolf" has already been on American soil (the word WOLVES seems more appropriate), 9/11 is proof of that, and I for one am thankful that precautions are taken in large cities as well as small, rural towns.

Re: What is this world coming to?

I didn't post this to make any reference toward Bush.I just think it's sad how things have changed since 9-11.Just shows you how alert we all are these days-even when it comes to a childs backpack.
