Question how tall is your mailbox?

When we moved in here a year and a half ago, there was an old mailbox on the porch. We got rid of it and replaced it with the mailbox we brought from our old house. Now after a year and a half, I get a note in my mailbox today saying that our mailbox has to be at least 36 inches off the ground or they are going to suspend our mail service. Now I have to go out and buy a new mailbox.

Re: how tall is your mailbox?

Ok, why should it matter how high your mailbox is if it is your mail? is the carrier having to stoop to place mail in the box? Is it a normal box(IE the kind you see on the side of the road) or a house side box? and if it a house side box, couldn't you just raise it up? or is there a slot cut into your house? I would call :General Information
    1-800-ASK-USPS® or (800) 275-8777
    Hours of Operation:
Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. (Eastern Time)
    Saturdays from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. (Eastern Time)
    Closed Sundays and Holidays

and see if they say it is a rule, or if it just your post office

*** Edited to add here are some links to mailbox rules:

Re: how tall is your mailbox?

She does have to bend down to put the mail in the mailbbox. But I see her at least once a week if not more. She's always really nice and stops to talk for a minute and has never said anything about the mailbox being too low.

I'm just letting this get to me I guess because I haven't been in the best of moods lately. There's been some things going on in my life that I really can't post about here and every little thing seems to be getting on my nerves.

Re: how tall is your mailbox?

When we put up a box by the curb (we always had a PO box), we were told it had to be 36" off the ground. The USPS website doesn't specify though:

    2.0 Curbside Mailboxes
    2.1Manufacturer Specifications

Manufacturers of all mailboxes designed and made to be erected at the edge of a roadway or curbside of a street and to be served by a carrier from a vehicle on any city route, rural route, or highway contract route must obtain approval of their products under USPS Standard 7, Mailboxes, City and Rural Curbside. To receive these construction standards and drawings or other information about the manufacture of curbside mailboxes, write to USPS Engineering (see G043 for address).

    2.2Custom-Built
    Mailbox

The local postmaster may approve a curbside mailbox constructed by a customer who, for aesthetic or other reasons, does not want to use an approved manufactured box. The custom-built box must generally meet the same standards as approved manufactured boxes for flag, size, strength, and quality of construction.

    2.3Address Identification

Every curbside mailbox must bear the following address information:

    a. A box number, if used, inscribed in contrasting color in neat letters and numerals at least 1 inch high on the side of the box visible to the carrier’s regular approach, or on the door if boxes are grouped.

    b. A house number if street names and house numbers have been assigned by local authorities, and the postmaster authorizes their use as a postal address. If the box is on a different street from the customer’s residence, the street name and house number must be inscribed on the box.

    2.4Owner’s Name

The mailbox may bear the owner’s name.

    2.5Advertising

Any advertising on a mailbox or its support is prohibited.

    2.6Mailbox Post

The post or other support for a curbside mailbox must be neat and of adequate strength and size. The post may not represent effigies or caricatures that tend to disparage or ridicule any person. The box may be attached to a fixed or movable arm.

    2.7Location

Subject to state laws and regulations, a curbside mailbox must be placed to allow safe and convenient delivery by carriers without leaving their vehicles. The box must be on the right-hand side of the road in the direction of travel of the carriers on any new rural route or highway contract route, in all cases where traffic conditions are dangerous for the carriers to drive to the left to reach the box, or where their doing so would violate traffic laws and regulations.

What are the Postal Policies for Curbside Mailboxes?

Installation of curbside mailboxes must meet specific construction standards, which can be obtained from the local Post Office™ facility. For United States Postal Service STD-7, Mailboxes, City and Rural Curbside you may write to:

Delivery & Customer SVCS Equipment, Engineering, US Postal Service
    8403 Lee HWY
    Merrifield VA 22082-8101

The following are a few of the federal regulations that apply when installing a curbside mailbox:

Important: Before installing, moving or replacing your mailbox or mailbox support, you will need to contact your local Post Office.
All mailboxes must be approved by the United States Postal Service®.
Custom made mailboxes will be approved by the Postmaster if they meet established standards.
Name and address put on box should be at least one inch high.
Private mailbox located near the street next to a curb.
Generally, the boxes should be installed with the bottom of the box at a vertical height of between 3.5 and 4 feet from the road surface.
Because of varying road and curb conditions and other factors, you should contact the postmaster or carrier before setting up or replacing your mailboxes and supports
A mailbox with a lock must have a slot large enough to accommodate customer's daily mail volume.
Advertising on a mailbox or the supporting post of the mailbox is prohibited.
Only the United States Postal Service may use mailboxes for delivery without paying postage (Flyers, magazines, notes, letters, etc. found in or on mailboxes may be charged postage due) .
If you have received flyers on or in your mailbox, refer to your local Post Office facility.
Non-postal information, advertising, and any other matter not bearing postage may be placed in door slots (These are not considered mail boxes).
Note: A receptacle for newspaper delivery by private carriers may be attached to the post of a curbside mailbox used by the U.S. Postal Service® if the receptacle:

Does not touch the mailbox or use any part of the mailbox for support.
Does not interfere with the delivery of mail, obstruct the view of the mailbox flag, or present a hazard to carrier or vehicle.
Does not extend beyond the front of the mailbox when the box door is closed.
Does not display advertising, except the publication title.

I don't know anything about that, except ours was too short after the snowplower knocked it down last winter (and we ended up having to dig it out).

When we moved here we were told we had to have it at least 36 inches from the ground. This is standard. I think it is so if they drive they can access it from their car window without getting out. Not sure though. But yes she is right to ask you to move it.
Sometimes it is hard to let go of a memory, especially if you remind yourself of it everyday.

Re: how tall is your mailbox?

No one here has curb side mailboxes. They are all on their front porches or connected to their house. The lady next door has a mail slot in her front door. I haven't been able to find anything about mailboxes on porches or connected to the house.
