That is so sad. I just don't know what to say. It's so not fair.

I'm sorry, I didn't realize that your opinions were sancrosanct, and comments about them could not be made.

Also, who said I didn't agree with YOUR opinion (or anyone elses for that matter)??? I quoted 3 people...

If you look at the top of this thread, it says "Has anyone else heard this?". That is an invitation to make a comment, either agreeing or disagreeing... I chose to disagree (as far as the coverup)...

As far as constantly quoting things YOU say... in my opinion, that would be an exageration... I quote a lot of people... not just you. It makes it easier to understand what my comment relates to.

And you notice I didn't quote you this time???

and what "other members" are you talking about??? Better yet, send me a PM so this thread doesn't go off topic, and you can let me know...

Back to the topic...

I saw this on Fox News yesterday. While 21 suicides is not a good thing. This is not much higher than the suicide rate for the military in non war times. The military is a stressful environment and is not for everyone, add combat to that and of course it is going to go up. I don't think anyone was covering this up, since this is only January 15th and year-end statistics would just come out.

The rates acoording to the National average:
Nationally, the adult suicide rate in rural areas was 17.94 per 100,000 people in 1995, the most recent numbers available from the National Center for Health Statistics. In urban areas, the rate was 14.91.

Home of the nation's highest suicide rate, Nevada's overall rate last year was 20.18 per 100,000, almost double the national rate of 11.31 in 1998, the most recent figure available from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The rural rate was 25.63, compared to 18.91 in Clark County, which includes Las Vegas and has two-thirds of the state's population. The West as a whole had 12.95 suicides per 100,000 people in 1998. The South was second with a rate of 12.12, followed by the Midwest with 10.51 and the Northeast with 8.89.

JMO...and you know I would never ever offer it without being asked

Instead of being offended by someone quoting you, take it as an honor. Whenever someone quotes me, I realize that they actually took the time to read what I wrote and hopefully paused to think about it!
Seems I stir the hornets nest with most of my posts but that can be good. Makes for a lively dialogue. Works both ways. I try to be responsible when I quote others and let them know that I may disagree without being disrespectful but it doesn't always come across that way.

The article I posted from said the figures were similar to those posted by HVanWinkle. Also, the suicide rates among the military weren't much higher than the general public according to the Center for Disease control.

Suicides are not uncommon in these circumstances. I don't think this war is any different than WWI-WWII-Korea-Vietnam-or any other conflict of this nature. It is just a set of facts that are being used to fire up the people to be more against Bush and the War for the Election. To use such facts for political gain is a dishonor to the families of those who are dealing with such a loss.

Didn't mean to stir the pot. I just wanted to know if anyone else had heard this. I should have said the government instead of Bush - he isn't the only one who covers up stuff. ALL presidents have covered up things that don't look good. (I still don't like him, though!)

The article also said a special team had been set up in Ft. Bragg, NC to deal with increase in soldiers returning who killed their wives and then themselves. However, no mention was made of a black out by Bush and everybody knows how much I like his smirking grin plastered all over the place!

But, I do have an in-grown toenail that I know Bush is responsible for somehow. I'll let you know when I figure it out.
Was this article specific to the war in Iraq? There were several cases of service men at Ft Bragg who had been in Afghanistan killing their wives in 2002.
