How are they different? Please don't think I'm criticizing anyone. I'm just curious as to what ways the magic in Harry Potter is different from the fairy godmother turning a pumpkin into a coach with her magic wand or how is it different from the wicked witch in snow white.

Hope you don't mind me answering. And please don't think I'm flaming. I'm just going to try to explain a little. So please don't take this wrong.

Fairy godmother....isn't real...they don't exist.

Wicked witch....doesn't portray her as good...

Harry Potter is the good guy using witchcraft. Witches and witchcraft are real, maybe not in the same sense as Harry Potter and Bewitched, but it is real all the same. We are not to use things not of God, reguardless of the outcome and the bible clearly states that witchcraft is not of God. Harry Potter, real magic or not, uses powers not of God to gain good and is portrayed as the hero. It's a conflict.

Does this make any sense?

The "witchcraft" Harry Potter is using is not real. It's nothing at all like "real" witchcraft. Anyhow everyone has a right to their own beliefs I was just curious that's all.

harry potter is about real witch craft
there are some thing i would like to say but i'm not

first off

i don't have a wand with a unicorn hair in it and wave around saying words that do not make sense. (just like the fairy godmother)

i don't have a white owl that sends letters to people in far off places

i was never invited to go to a school to learn magic. or any school that had ghosts in the corodor, giants as ground keepers, or gobblins as history teachers.

the only broom i have around here is for cleaning.

i just want to know one thing all these strong opinions about harry potter are they based on the fact that they read the book and felt it went against their religion or was it given. i usually like to make my own opinnions on somthing i read for myself.

If "you" think is inapproperate for a child to read, then read it first and then use examples in that book to tell a school or whomever that these are the reasons why that "you" think the book should not be read by the child.
when my kids start brining home book list i will be making sure that i want my child to read it based on what i read not because of what someone else has said.

After going back and looking through the link to the other thread that was started by curlymae29 someome made a statement about not reading the books because they are Paganism. How do they know what the book is about if they haven't actually read it. I guess they are going by what others "think" it's about. I personally like to find out about things on my own and make my own choices and not base my decisions on what someone else thinks.

To be honest, no I haven't read the books and don't plan to. I don't have to read it to know that there are things in the book that are just too close for comfort. I'll use the example you provide...

i don't have a wand with a unicorn hair in it and wave around saying words that do not make sense. (just like the fairy godmother)

While a witches wand doesn't contain unicorn hair, a wand is used in the practice of magic.

Witches do use Magic Wands...
Often you see the use of magic wands in children's cartoons and movies making the idea seem frivolous. In actuality they are used in healing for directing energy.
http://www.shemahonline.com/wicca.htm
(A sword or wand may be used to symbolize Air or Fire, and many "maps" disagree on with which element the sword or wand should be associated.)

i don't have a white owl that sends letters to people in far off places

You may not own an owl, but there again it is used, and the last example give even claims it was bringing a message. I'm not sure if it's wicca or pagan.

Witches frequently kept wild animal pets: foxes, weasels, owls, ravens; and of course, the ubiquitous cats. Such became known, appropriately enough, as familiars.
http://www.supernaturalworld.com/ophiola.html
Hakpen in the old British dialects signifies Hak, serpent, and pen, head, i.e., Head of the Serpent. "To our name of Hakpen," says Stukeley, "alludes ochim, called 'doleful creatures' in our translation." Isa (13 v. 21), speaking of the desolation of Babylon, says: Wild beasts of the desert shall lie there, and their houses shall be full of ochim, and owls shall dwell there, and satyrs shall dance there." St. Jerome translates it "serpents." The Arabians call a serpent Haie, and wood-serpents Hageshin; and thence our Hakpen; Pen is "head" in British.

The White Goddess
The Goddess is a lovely, slender woman with a hooked nose, deathly pale face, lips red as rowan-berries, startlingly blue eyes and long fair hair; she will suddenly transform herself into sow, mare, b*****, vixen, she-a**, weasel, serpent, owl, she-wolf, tigress, mermaid, or loathsome hag.... I cannot think of any true poet from Homer onwards who has not independently recorded his experience of her.
http://www.manticarts.com/Message%20Archive/Jan02.htm
Prior to the events of September 11th, a magnificent white owl visited me. She came early one morning as my dogs howling in the backyard awakened me. As I ran outside to see what they were disturbed by, I heard the sound of large wings flying around me and saw a beautiful white owl sitting in the tree just above me. White owls are not common in Southern California, especially not near the beach where I live, and definitely not during the morning hours as these are nocturnal creatures. As I gazed into her eyes I knew I was being visited by a messenger, a fifth dimensional Mayan being from the Owl Priestess Cult.

the only broom i have around here is for cleaning.

Witches rituals not only use brooms, but they ride them.

http://www.msnusers.com/covenstead/w...thebasics.msnw
There are many other minor tools which are used for some specific purposes within magical workings, but the tools described above are the basic ones used in the practice of Witchcraft, and many of the minor tools are extrapolations of the basic ones (e.g. the broom of the wand, the sword of the athame, the cauldron of the cup, etc.)
http://www.conjure.com/COG/ifaq.html
Q. Do Witches fly on brooms? No. Brooms were (in rural Europe) and sometimes still are ridden astride in ceremonies. In one such ceremony, people ran through the fields astride a broom to coax the grain to grow, or participants would leap over a broom, telling the grain to grow to the height of the highest leaping. Uninformed observations of such ceremonies could lead to tales of flying on brooms.

So you see...my opinion isn't based on what someone told me. Yes, I've listened to what people tell me, but I look into it myself. And there is enough in the books that I feel is too close for comfort for me. I know that there are others who agree and disagree with me. Each person must make up his/her own mind. I'm simply stating how I feel and how I came to feel that way.

so because someone uses a wand it's pagan. the whole point of the diffrence of using the wand is not the same as it is in harry potter and real witchcraft. and i certanly can't pick up a feather with it.

becuase someone uses an owl to send letters it's pagan, i have never heard of a pagan using an owl to attach a box of cholotes to send someone. all religions use animals as symbols one way or another, if he had used a lamb would it have been view diffrently

becuase someone uses a broom it's pagan, brooms are uses in ceromonys not to be ridden around on in a made up game

if the books were actually read then one could see how silly it is to compare the two

i wouldn't dare compare all of christianity to a sci fi fantsay book

i like to form my own opinions on certain matters, if that makes me strange then so be it. my mind is my own. but i will not be insulted by having a fictional story being compared to real Wicca.

posting this yet again

Witchcraft and Harry Potter

The Harry Potter books are evil and Satanic. That's Hogwarts...I mean Hogwash!
As the 5th Harry Potter book is being released, the debate over its moral and religious implications has been revived. Christians are arguing that J.K Rowlings's fictional tales are actually filled with true and accurate information on witchcraft, and that children will start casting real spells. Such things are Satanic and cannot be allowed. Parents are protesting and books are being banned across the country.

As a Wiccan and a witch, I felt the need to make a statement:

The Harry Potter books have nothing to do with real Witchcraft

The only "real" witchcraft elements in the books, are the real stereotypes that have dogged Witchcraft for decades. Flying around on broomsticks, pointed witches hats, and the shooting of lightning from magic wands, to name a few. To explain what "real" witchcraft is, goes beyond the scope of this little article. Even though Witchcraft and Wicca are not the same thing, I suggest you visit my What is Wicca? page and do a little reading. It may clear up some popular misconceptions. Many of those who are against Harry Potter tend to lump Wiccans and Witches together, which is incorrect.
As I searched the Internet looking for pro-Potter sites, I was absolutely overwhelmed by the number of articles and sites dedicated to "exposing the evil truths about Harry Potter". What surprised me even more was the blatent lies and false information they contain. The biblical references used to back up their claims are questionable at best, and all of them are focused on the evils of magick and Witchcraft. The connection between J.K Rowling's books and Witchcraft is all in their heads. The 'experts' don't really know anything about Witchcraft at all.

I doubt my little voice will be heard amongst the cacophony of Christian fear and outrage. But hopefully, some people will actually stop and think about their claims before protesting these books. My point here is not to debate the Christian position on Witchcraft, but remove harmless, fantasy novels from the fray. We Witches are misrepresented enough as it is.

I guess what I don't understand is why people want to compel someone to read a book they don't want to read for whatever reason (aside from a school assignment, and then the parents should have a right to object to a book). I am not going to read any of the Harry Potter books and neither are my children and I don't think I should have to justify why we aren't to anyone. It is my choice. There are plenty of books out there to choose from, so my kids will not be harmed in any way by not reading the Harry Potter books. If you want to read them, go ahead, and I will go ahead and not read them. Just my opinion.

I think it's more the fact that Harry Potter is being compared to actual witchcraft. Pagans and Wiccans have a hard enough time in society and it doesn't help when people compare it to real witchcraft. Nobody is telling anyone that they have to read the books. We just don't need anymore negativity. I hope that makes sense.

I guess a lot of Wiccans are not too fond of the books as well when it sterotypes them. It's not just Christians who don't like them.

Like I said I take the books on the same level as the Wizard of Oz. A good fantasy and that's all.
