He should read the book and then write a brilliant critical essay proving why it wasn’t good literature and offer examples of good books he’s read, discussing why he thinks they are more suitable for his age group. He’ll get an A and learn a lot
This is a wonderful learning experience.
Kids shouldn’t expect to “agree” with everything they read in school; it is a place to learn about different ideas, philosophies, politics, governments, and learn how to look at things critically and how to avoid mistakes by understanding those from our history.
Students often read “Mein Keimpf” (sp?) Hitler’s autobiography, or “Das Kapital” a diatribe for Communism, not because the teacher thinks they should “agree” with them, but so they can learn how those men got power and how to avoid mistakes like that again.
Students need to learn critical thinking skills and discernment. How can he be a teacher/banker/lawyer/doctor if he refuses to read anything he doesn’t agree with. Professionalsl face difficult situations every day and must learn how to deal with them and foster cooperation in their organization, not refuse to have anything to do with something because he doesn’t “agree” with it.
Much of the day at work and home is being a problem solver. If we only dealt with things we “agreed” with we’d have no problems! Right! A life with no problems isn’t possible, so here’s a good chance to learn to deal with a difficulty rather than running away. ! If he’s good at persuasive argument and proving a point, he could be practicing for his future as an attorney! Anyway, critical thinking is a great skill to develop. One cn learn alot from reading about things we want to improve.

Personally I would rather have my son read a fictional story, about fun and fantasy, than books like "catcher in the Rye" like i had to read in school, where every other word is a curse word...I am a Christian, and I look at this book for pure entertainment value..my kids have watched both Hary Potter Movies (I watched with him), you son doesn't have to agree with witchcraft, to enjoy the entertainment value of the book...I think it is whimsical, like a dream world that kids dream about..most kids..I know I have..dreamt about being able to make their dreams come true..Some people may disagree, but i look at the book as pure fun/entertainment..

If your son is getting a good religious foundation from you and his family, reading Harry Potter shouldn't hurt him. I haven't read the books but as long as there is no porn or adult situations in them for his age group he should be ok. It's like the Wizard of Oz. Just fantasy.
The Wizard of Oz was never an issue when I was growing up. I never picked that for a book report but I never heard of any problem from others picking out any book to report on and I went to a religious school.
The children who where of another religion went to the same school and when anything concerning religion came up, like going to Mass or praying, they were always excused. They stayed in the school room and did homework.
If reading a book on another religion or a fantasy is involved I don't think it hurts children to read about it. To them it's just another path or just fantasy. Interesting but that's all. Children need to learn they can be exposed to other ways and ideas without it harming them, otherwise they will be too afraid to be around people who are not like them.
I think Harry Potter is here to stay so take it like the Wizard of Oz. Fantasy and fun but that's all.

I think what your son is doing is wonderful!
I do not think your son should have to read any book that you do not approve of. You are his parent and responsible for raising him to be a fine, upstanding human being. I do not think your son should be forced to do anything that you feel is inappropriate. As Jesus said, when you stand up for Him and Christian beliefs, people are going to be against you but with God, "the impossible is possible." Just as a little show of support to OP only---I do not allow my children to read these books or watch these movies either based on our Christian beliefs as you stated. I do not critcize others for doing so-I have good friends whose children enjoy the series but I will not buy any products as Christmas gifts supporting the Potter series either. Good luck to you! Many blessings and strength for your stance go out to you and your family.

Hi Fireball, BYE FIREBALL!
BTW, this is a wonderful learning experience; now learn from it and don't re-register. And speaking of reading, you should have read the rules, and we wouldn't be having this discussion (one-sided as it is).
We now return to the thread topic...

I hope I spelled your name right. First of all you should be very proud of your son to stand up to his convictions. Second of all you should be proud of the job you have done with God's help to teach your son. Well done Timothy 1

I agree 100%. Considering how controversial Harry Potter is, it should not be required reading. Just look at the difference of opinions found right here!
As far as her email...take it to the principle of the school. If that doesn't do any good take it to the school board. She has no right to put down a parent because of their beliefs. Who is she to put herself above you?

I'm not flaming you but I am curious about something. I'm not sure how old your son is but would you approve of him watching movies or reading books such as Sleeping Beauty, Snow White, Cinderella and a lot of the other ones by Disney? Harry Potter is along the same lines of those books and movies. Harry Potter is not about "real" witchcraft. It's just fiction like all of those Disney movies.

I am the first to admit when I am wrong....
I still agree that it is the student's option to elect not to read something that he finds offensive and that it is up to the student and parent to agree on which topics to take a stand, however, I must say that lavenerpl's argument was very convincing - and good advice.
I especially agree with the following (although all of it was relevant):

Please understand that I still believe that it takes courage to stand up for something that you believe in, but the option that lavenderpl came up with allows him to do this within the assignment.

just difference of opinion, you may see Harry Potter similar to the other movies you mentioned, but she and her son don't.
