Not really a vent, just wondering out loud
I have been taking the girls to their cookie booth sales all weekend. Why is it some people have to talk to these girls about things that just are so not appropriate? This guy earlier was talking to them about supporting the war effort. These girls range from 6 to 8 years old. They are little kids, they don't know anything about war. Or, the guy who pulled up in his car and didn't understand why I wouldn't send little girls down to his car to sell him cookies.
Then, there are the people that are just rude. If you don't want cookies just say so. Don't lie to them and tell them you don't have any money and then pull out a wad of cash to buy a soda. Yesterday they nicely asked some guy if he wanted to buy cookies and he told them that maybe if they looked on the ground they would find some money. WTH is that supposed to mean?
Then are the really good people. Like the guy this morning who didn't want any cookies, but gave the troop $6.00 to buy themselves two boxes. All in all I guess it all evens out in the end.

Like with anything else in life - there are some morons and some heros. Hope your girls had more heros than morons!! I always buy the cocanut-caramel ones myself!!
It does irk me when the kids lurk outside businesses with those donation cans and beg for money. What are we teaching them?? Let them wash cars, have a bake sale or sell cookies!!! Life isn't about handouts. But even there - I just politely refuse and go on my way. It's probably just me and other people don't mind this.

My six year old got all excited this morning because some guy bought a box of every kind of cookie. She thought that was so cool.
A man with good taste-- those are the best cookies!

I dont' mind if they are selling something.. I usually buy a candy bar or cookies if I have brought money with me and not the good ole checkbook or CC. It is when they're just standing there with a bucket that I get irritated. I agree with Danny - it shouldn't be a handout... Kids today expect everything to be handed to them without any effort on their part.

I agree with you both. I hate when they are just out there asking for money.
My girls work very hard with cookie sales and the rummage sale they do in the summer. They use their money earned for fun things like camp and parties and also for a couple of community service projects we do (we grow a community garden at our school, we have adopted a nursing home, at Thanksgiving we do a food drive for the food bank, and at Christmas we either adopt a family or do a warm clothing drive for a shelter). I think it is important for them to learn when they are young not just to think of themselves. I am very proud of them. For the most part they are thoughtful, caring girls (they have their moments, but they are still young!).

How can you not be happy when you are consuming large amounts of sugar??? I know what you mean about buying more than you intend to. I don't even want to think about how many I have bought so far.
My neighbor just came over. They were sitting there and thinking they wanted something sweet, but didn't want to go to the store. Then, they thought of the Girl Scout cookies. So, she sent him over for a couple of boxes! He said it is just so convenient having them next door. I just hope the college kids don't get the munchies and get any bright ideas of coming over late at night!

I felt bad passing by the girls at the stores, but I let them know that I'd already bought a supply from the neighbor's kid. Hopefully, they don't think I'm making it up!

I am sure they know you aren't making it up. My girls know that when they ask and someone says no to thank them and tell them to have a nice day.

That's too bad you've had to deal with rude people. I thought everyone loved Girl Scout cookies! Everyone I know does. My hubby and I both like Thin Mints the best, if a box lasts longer than 24 hours in our house, it's a miracle.
Someone mentioned lemon cremes- I miss the lemon ones they had back when I was a Girl Scout in the mid 80s, the ones they've had since just aren't as good. But I haven't gotten them in a couple years, so maybe they've changed again.
I'll buy pretty much anything that kids are selling for their schools, or scouting, etc. I can usually spare a few dollars and besides, I still remember doing fundraisers like that. I agree with what others have said, I think just asking for money teaches the wrong lesson.
