I can SO relate to this, it's a daily battle we have here. I blame the media. My dot always think she is fat, and she is not in anyway. But she will skip meals, eat salads etc. Breaks my heart, and it is something else that will be addressed when we go to counseling. I just don't know what to say on this, it's a very sore subject with me.

Sad thing is that it continues as they grow older. I always tell my daughter when she is looking at pics of models in the mags, that it is an airbrushed picture. Sure, you don't see the cellulite, the stretchmarks, the blemishes..etc because the photographer airbrushes that picture to perfection. Thank God, the "large" look in becoming the rage now, instead of the skin tight, non-there clothes. There should be MORE media on the what happens when you starve yourself to be thin. Look at Mariah Carey, she openly admitted that her breakdown was in part to "staying thin". I also tell me daughter that genetics have a huge part in it. If your family has big hips, then you might as well accept that you won't be a size 5, no matter how hard you try. I could go on and on with this, but I will just leave quietly.

That's a F#$^%$& loaded gun question if I ever heard one,,,,'you have to choices, you can either gain weight or die, which would you choose'. MY GAWD!!! I DARE the school system around here to ask my child that question! There was nothing good about self esteem or anything good accomplished with asking those kids that question,,,,,stepping out of here now before I get banned!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I agree with beesknees on this...I grew up in a very GERMAN family, where we were all bigger, even as kids...If someone would have asked that when I was young, I would have said dead to be honest b/c I got the brunt of the teasing when we grew up. But I also had a family that told me I was beautiful everyday. I know I am beautiful, no matter how big or small I am.
A lot of girls come into my store and they talk about their weight. I work with 2 girls who are anorexic as well. One day I asked one of them, "Shandy, do you think I am pretty...? She said, Kari, I think you are beautiful, seriously..." And I calmly explained to her, "Shandy, I am never going to be thin, never have been, but I know I am beautiful, and I wish you could see that same beauty in yourself. She began BAWLING. She checked into rehab the next day for her eating disorder and I hear that she is doing wonderful and has gained some much needed weight.
I agree, its the media that is to blame. They tell you what is beautiful and what is ugly. We just have to teach our children how to see people in the real way instead of superficially..

The thing is, while I agree with you that kids should be allowed to be kids, the fact that they opted for the most negative answer in such an overwhelming percent to this question like this shows that they think about it, even if nobody has brought it up so bluntly before.
I am reasonably sure that is just one of the points the survey was trying to make.
Sad though......
