Re: SSI widows benefits
I have only heard of survivors benefits... of which SSA is not cutting anyone off of unless they don't meet the requirements.

Re: SSI widows benefits
My mom draws widow's benefits. SS considers her a 'divorced widow' because she never remarried even though my parents had been divorced 29 years. She drew off my dad when she turned 65, after his death her benefits more than doubled.
My SIL's mom draws widow's benefits from her stepdad. As far as I know, a spouse who is at least 60, widowed or a divorcee who was married at least 10 years and never remarried qualifies. You can draw at a younger age if you are considered disabled.
My mom isn't losing hers.
edited to say...my mom is drawing regular SS retirement benefits, I don't know about SSI.

SSI doesn't give widows benefits, are you sure it is not from her spouse?
SSI payments are based on income, you need to be under a certain amount to be able to get benefits. Does she have other income?

Re: SSI widows benefits
SS DOES give widows benefits IF you have children under 16. When the children hit 16, benefits end until retirement age.

Re: SSI widows benefits
My husband was killed when I was 20. I rec'd a survivor benefit for our son until he turned 16. He rec'd a survivor benefit until he graduated from school. My benefit was based on income, my sons was not. I believe what everyone refers to as widows benefits is actually survivor benefit. The govt is not cutting these benefits out, but I suspects OP's mom is being disqualified due to age (switching to standard SSI), or income, or some other obsure govt regulation. She needs to demand an explanation from one of those SS workers whosa salaries are paid by our tax dollars.

Re: SSI widows benefits
Social security benefits and SSI benefits are two VERY different things. SSI is Supplemental Security Income and it has very different rules than any other SS program. They do not provide any type of "widows" or "survivors" benefits. SSI is for the aged, blind, or disabled.
In order to get survivors benefits from the SSA, the person who has passed away, must have enough work credits in order for his/her family to qualify.

Correct...again SSI doesn't give WIDOWS benefits. SSI is based in INCOME(if you are ruled disabled and have not paid in enough to receive disabled SS).

Re: SSI widows benefits
ok she gets widows benefits where my dad died(it comes from the social securtiy administration) its from where he worked for sooo long then went on social security(all 4 of my sisters drew off it til they were 18 i think. my last sister turned 16 but she will still receive it cause she is in school.(new law they passed)anyway my mom is only 55 so shes not quite at the retirement age.she received a letter saying she would be cut off .that is the only income she gets.the letter also stated my sis would NOT be cut off until she is 18 IF she continues to attent school.so my ? is why would they cut her off?(Im sure shes eligible if my sis is) anyway also a lot of widows/survivors whos spouses work in coal mines, are police officers/firefighters or anyone who has died on the job are now being cut off of their benefit(my dad didnt die while on the job).but some are being cut off besides my mom.and i cant find anything on it other than the ones being cut off for their spouses working in certain fields/who died while on the job.thats why Im wondering.

Re: SSI widows benefits
shes being cut off because she is no longer caring for a child under the age of 16. She will not be eligible again until she reaches retirement age or she can get reduced benefits when she turns 60.
