    dog fighting

can someone please tell me why it is so hard for the police to crack down on dog fighting? I can't blame them because I am sure it is the higher ups that aren't doing anything about it. I have to read a story once a week that someone in Buffalo is getting arrested for fighting dogs. The problem seems to be that they get out of jail in no time and even though their dogs were confiscated they can just go out and get more. You can bet that if a person is fighting dogs, that's not the only illegal thing they are up to. We even had a problem a couple years ago with these thugs stealing people's pets to use as bait. The very thought of it makes me want to kill someone. I say lock them up for a long, long time. You can bet that a person who is able to do what these people do aren't fit to be walking around. Let's start weeding out the people who contribute nothing to society.

Absolutely heartbreaking I feel so bad for the dogs (and other animals) that are used this way. The only thing I can think of as to why police don't crack down on this more, is the criminals who own the dogs move them often. I saw a program about this and the police were always just one step behind. There needs to be tougher laws so the convicted spend more time behind bars.

The last guy they caught here got 30 years in prison and a $120,000 fine to be paid to the ASPCA. Dog fights move all the time and most people keep those dogs hidden so they can't be confiscated.

If you make the fines higher and the jail time longer, it will become less and less profitable to fight dogs. Or roosters, or hogs and dogs or whatever animals people use for fighting. Eventually people will quit doing it because when they get caught, they are literally out of business. I hope that all states make people who fight dogs have to go to jail for a minimum of 20 years.

Probably beause it is just as hard for them to stop Child Abuse. Unless people gain control of their neighborhoods, these sort of things will continue to happen. We (several neighbors and myself), just got rid of some gangbangers that moved in. We kept pressing the police to do the right thing. It was a total mess.

    Re: dog fighting

We had an incident of dog fighting surface here this past October. I was horrified but not surprised by who was involved with it. I am proud to live in Oregon and in Portland but so embarrassed to have a pro basketball team with our name - Portland - associated with it. One of the Portland Trailblazers was involved with dog fighting. Today he pled guilty in court. His sentence .. a laughable 80 hours of community service and 1 year probation. The team has waived him and hopefully that will hold up, but his punishment for this crime is beyond stupid. It is just simply not enough.

And as others have mentioned, if they are involved in this type of activity they are involved in other illegal actions. This person has been suspended for multiple counts of drug abuse, sale of drugs, possession of drugs, driving without insurance, driving without a license, domestic violence and who knows what else.

It just irritates me to no end that these poor animals are abused and often maimed or even killed for someone's sick sadistic pleasure. And it really jerks me that someone like this supposed sports hero - someone our kids are looking up to - get off so danged easy.

It's a crime that needs to be punished severely and the punishment needs to last for a very long time.

If our courts needs some great ideas on how to punish these idiots I will be happy to offer some up !

He was supposed to perform his community service with the Oregon Humane Society, but they don't want him there. So now the judge has to find somewhere else for him to serve.

These pro athletes get away with everything just short of murder, and now dog fighting. I sincerely hope no other team picks him up. That would be his biggest punishment. Going from a cushy high paying job to being just a joe on the street. Just think, no fan adoration, no special treatment, no gobs of money...

Dog fighting is such a nasty business. I cannot begin to imagine doing that to a dog. But I guess the people who do this think of the dogs as just property--not a living, breathing feeling being. A lot of these people will abandon their dog(s) rather than be caught. Poor puppies.
