    food stamps

I know I am probably going to get a lot of flack from this post because I did last time I posted something like this but I am so mad I could scream. Just came back from the grocery store where I was behind a woman in line who was using food stamps. She was probably my age(29). With her food stamps, she purchased, ice cream, candy bars, chips, slim jims, gum, and soda. I'm sorry to say but if you need food stamps you should be buying food, not junk. I have worked more than 1 job my entire life and know that sometimes you have to give up things like junkfood to feed yourself the right way. Her bill was over 20 dollars when for that amount she could have fed herself and her child for a month if she had just bought htings like rice, pasta, canned vegis, lunchmeat and bread. I am not saying that the child doesn't deserve a treat once in a while but use your freaking head. I have to give up luxuries to afford to live, so why don't people that are getting free money for not working?

    Thumbs down Re: food stamps

ITA. It has been proven that the mass consumption of food like stuff(like you listed) has lead to rampant obesity. So basically they use your tax money so that people can get fat and then they use more of your tax money to help these fat people lose the weight. I'm thinking that if they would make a subgroup of food called junk and then made such things offlimits to food stamps then we might be able to actually FEED a lot more people. My favorite line of people who are usually against limiting what you can get with food stamps is "but it's too expensive to eat healthy" Sorry I don't buy it.

These are the people who abuse the use of the food stamps. There are others who use their food stamps on milk, then pull out their own money for beer and go hop in their car that is nicer than the ones working people drive. Some way they figure out a way to get around the system. They are always bad apples in the barrel. I went to college with girls who went home and fed their kids grits for supper. There are lots of poor people out there. There are many more who only use welfare as a last resort and for them it is a great boon. For the ones who were raised on welfare, well they think the world owes them a living and their children will grow up feeling the same way.

Unless you personally know the person, how can you judge what they buy? It might have been for a party at her childs school , send treats, I get them all the time. I am on food stamps, I work, but I am also a single mom and what I make doesnt go around. And before I get flamed for having internet, I use my dads account. I am not meaning to be rude, but I am so tired of being judge as lazy or worthless or a scammer just because I receive food stamps. That program is to help people and they should not have to be made to fell less for having to use the program. JMO

    Re: food stamps

first off...i get food stamps. i do not allow junk food in my house generally but do sometimes buy it. i spend prolly $20 a month on that sort of junk (not slim jims...yuck!) but it is not a crime to ocassionally buy things like that. second...how do you know that was even her card. i am a home aide...i shop for others sometimes and i often have to pick up nasty unhealthy junk because that is what i was asked to get! third...how do you know that is all she ever buys...perhaps she has a large family and that is all she will spend for a month...perhaps it is for a birthday...etc.

no offense...but it seems you are jumping to the "she is a cheat" conclusion when you really don't know.

i do, however, agree that some ppl rook the system and make every effort to report abuses when i see them.

FOURTH.......HOW CAN YOU FEED 2 PPL FOR $20 A MONTH?! that is a crock and you know it. i am sure you were just exaggerating but that is impossible. milk is $3 a gallon after all.

    Re: food stamps

It is very possible those were snacks for movie night at the families house. I have a working friend who is on Food Stamps and buys things like that for a movie night with her children and a few of their friends.

People on Food Stamps tend to be the ones that buy healthier foods than the rest of us. Obesity is not always from eating poorly and overeating. Many people who are overweight or obese have other health issues that caused their weight gain. It is unfair to think that all people who have weight issues overeat or eat the wrong things.

If you put many more limits on the Food Stamp program we will see a different level of red tape and bureaucracy that will lead to more confusion in the check out line which will outweigh any of the objections to certain food purchases.

It wouldn't hurt for some people to get more involved in their communities in teaching others in how to prepare and shop for good nutrition and keep the bureaucracy out.

    Re: food stamps

I agree that some people milk the system for all they can... however...

I don't think that just because someone buys junk food with food stamps necessarily means she shouldn't be on them. Once upon a time we were on foodstamps and because I tried so hard to shop thrifty, there was almost always a some left over for some treats for the kids and they got ice cream, chips etc. Some of the snacks could have very well been treats for a childs lunch or something.

ITA with cinlore9... unless you know the person, they shouldn't be judged.

Now, when you want talk about sitting in the DHS office waiting to apply for assistance, and you are seated in a room full of people with new leather jackets, name brand EXPENSIVE clothing, cell phones, nice jewelry, great nails and then watch them leave and drive off in a new car.. then yes THAT makes me angry! When we were on foodstamps, I went an entire winter without a coat because I had to buy the girls coats that fit them that year.... I'm not complaining about not having a coat, but you have got to wonder if some case workers actually pay attention to their clients.

Ok, yea, it could allll have been borrowed from a friend or relative, but what are the chances and WHY would someone dress like they have all kinds of money when they are at DHS for help?? I certainly wouldn't expect a person to "dress down" but I sold a lot of my things over the years so that my kids wouldn't go without food, clothes etc. and when I was out of things to sell, THEN I went to DHS. I wouldn't last a day as a social worker because I'd be asking lots of questions lol

ok.. off the soapbox I go!

    Re: food stamps

No flames from me OP. I personnally think that people should not be allowed to use food stamps on junk food period, especially candy and soda. Hey I don't buy that crap for my kid, so why should they be allowed to buy that crap for their kids using the taxes I pay? I also don't think they should allow people to spend their food stamps at gas stations and convenient stores. sorry but those places are way overpriced and if you need food stamps then you should be trying to stretch them are far as you can. I used to work at a gas station and we always had people coming in and using their foodstamps and loading up on sodas, candy , and chips.....hey we sold fruit too, but they never seemed to buy that!!! Its just plain ridiculous...I think they should have much stricter guidelines on how they can be spent and where, such as legitimate grocery stores that aren't going to rape you on prices.
