Just be glad that you don't have to stand in line using foodstamps while someone like you is giving you a disgusted look while eyeballing every item that you have chosen to buy.

yeah it's cheap to live here. where i use to live (wa state) i paid $600 for a 2 bedroom duplex, which was a steal because normally places like that go for at least $900+ i see in the papers in my area all the time apts and houses that you can rent for $400 of less. of course minimum wage is less, but unless you are working in fast food or the like you probably won't get paid $5.15 an hour.

    Re: food stamps

Wow, wow, wow!!! A small two bedroom in my area goes for a minimum of 900 to 1100 a month. Wages are not great for unskilled workers or workers who have a two year degree for that matter. I think areas that have a high cost of living should have a "Living Wage". Some areas do it. They have a minimum wage that they expect could resonably provide a person a way to support themselves. At $200 to $400 a week how could they expect someone to take care of themselves when rent is so expensive. After taxes, health plan charges, rent, insurance, gas, utilities, food... if you can manage to cover all that and that's a BIG IF... what if you need to make a medical copayment, need cough syrup for your child, pedialyte pops, new shoes, a haircut? It's terrible, and most areas like mine, if the rents are high everything else sky high too. In my area a family of three that makes $1500 a month is entitled to assistance if that gives you a clue. I believe you can also get complete medical coverage if you don't have access or it is too expensive to buy through your employer if you make up to $2800 or $3000 a month for a small fee. Again, another indicator of living expense being way too high.

one of the reasons our family moved here was that houses are so cheap. my inlaws spent $4,500 on their fixer upper. we co own it because we put in a couple thousand of our own on the improvements and a couple months of labor on fixing the place up. we are saving up to buy our own home and when we have the money (and when my inlaws buy us our on our share of the house) we will buy a house outright.

not sure about other states but in ohio you either have to be working so many hours in a regular job in order not to 'work them off' or you have to put in your hours at your job(if not enough) PLUS 35 hours a WEEK at a job they provide(which you don't get a pay check for as its you 'working for your food'). when i was on welfare, my job didnt cover all my bills, but i decided not to opt for cash assistance also because working 75+ hours a WEEK was not worth it to me. it averaged out that i'd be working for like $2.xx an hour if i took the cash assistance, not to meantion the fact that was more time i'd have to spend away from my son. was bad enough already that 5 days out of the week i saw him maybe an hour, since i had no car and had to walk 2 miles to work each day, killing myself pretty much(almost passed out quite a few times on my walk to work from the heat and being pregnant).

    Re: food stamps

Let me just say this......no one knows anyones compllete situation, and there for it is not their place to judge anyone else. I have worked for years and am now on disability(SSI), I do recieve food stamps but it is not that much($124.00) does not feed a family of 4 for a whole month. I buy alot of my stuff at discount stores. I look at it his way........I get $1600.00 a month.

    Rent...$750.00
    Utilities...$150.00
    Trash Removal....$70.00 every three months
    Phone....$50.00
    Personal Needs...$70.00

I also pay for RX'S that the medicaid will not cover.
SOUND SIMPLE OR EASY???? THINK AGAIN!!!

    I have 2 handicapped kids......requires extra expenses.
NOW FOR ALL OF YOU THAT LIKE TO COMPLAIN ABOUT WHAT KIND OF VEHICLE SOMEONE DRIVES OFF IN WHEN THEY LEAVE THE WELFARE OFFICE, THINK BEFORE YOU JUDGE OR KEEP QUIET. I TOOK THE CITY BUS FOR 10 YEARS BECAUSE I COULD NOT AFFORD A CAR, I NOW HAVE A 2001 CHEVY IMPALA AND I GET ALOT OF DIRTY LOOKS AND COMMENTS ABOUT IT BUT IT DID NOT COME WITH OUT A HIGH PRICE ATTACHED TO IT..........THAT CAR IS PAID FOR.....NO PAYMENTS, ONLY AN ADDITIONAL $93.00 A MONTH FOR CAR INSURANCE. I DID NOT HAVE TO PAY FOR IT, THAT CAR BELONGED TO MY FATHER AND WHEN HE DIED IN APRIL THE INSURANCE COMPANY PAID THE BANK FOR THE CAR AND IT WAS GIVEN TO ME. I WOULD GLADLY CONTINUE TAKING THE CITY BUS AGAIN IF I COULD HAVE MY FATHER BACK. VERY HIGH PRICE TO PAY TO HAVE A NICE CAR IN MY OPINION. WHAT I HAVE AND WHERE IT CAME FROM I FEEL IS NO ONES BUSINESS BUT MY OWN AND I REPORTED ALL I HAVE AND GET EVERY MONTH TO MY CASEWORKER. REGUARDLESS, WHEN I SHOP WHAT I BUY IS MY BUSINESS AND I ALWAYS HAVE SOME MONEY LEFT OVER EVERY MONTH. I STILL BUY A BAG OF CHIPS, COOKIES & ETC EACH MONTH WITH MY EBT CARD BUT I DO IT AT THE 2ND HAND THRIFT BREAD STORE. I GUESS IF IT'S ANYBODYS PLACE TO COMPLAIN ABOUT WHAT IS BEING BOUGHT IT IS UP TO THE GOVERNMENT AND NOBODY ELSE.....THEY MADE THEIR OWN RULES SO THEIR SHOULDNT BE ANY COMPLAINTS.

AS FOR POOR PEOPLE BEING OVER WEIGHT THAT IS NOT ALWAYS THE CASE, I'M NOT RICH....I EAT RIGHT....AND I EAT SO CALLED JUNK FOOD AND I WEIGH 97 POUNDS WHICH IS NORMAL FOR ME!!!

    ENOUGH SAID ON MY PART!!!

OMG.....I meant laid off, wow....that is a funny typo, but I meant laid off. Yes, I get made about the abusers due to the fact I know they are abusing the system when they come through the lane with their fake finger nails all prettily painted, or cigarrettes...etc.

    Re: food stamps

i just wanted to say that I also recieve foodstamps. We get 570$ a month SSI and 140$ foodstamps (it went down cuz of cost of living made our SSI check go up) and I clean a ladies house for 60$ a week (sometimes 30$ when she rips me off; but thats another story) We barely make ends meet. I buy as much as i can with the foodstamps but thats not even enough for two people. I would LOVE to know how to make enough food for two people for 20$ a month!!! I live in a small town and theres not a lot of grocery stores to choose from and they all charge way too much but i try to make my foodstamps strech. I buy some healthy stuff like fruit and veggies but I also will buy some "junk food". Reason being junk food is a lot more cheaper to buy than "healthy food". Its sad that i can get more for my money by buying junk food thank healthy but its true. I will tell you that i REFUSE to buy steak or shrimp or anything like that with my foodstamps (i wont even buy it with my own money!!) I think its wrong for people to use their stamps on steak and shrimp. Thats WAY too much. I will however stock up on chicken and hamburger. So anyhow please dont judge people without knowing their situation. Some people do abuse the system but some of us honest people are just trying to get by. I just hope you never have to find out for yourself!

    Re: food stamps

lets say you got almost $400 a month in FS a month, then would you buy steak? sometimes certain cuts can be bought on sale for the same price as pork. the point is, if you get all these FS you have to use them on something. i would think spending $3 on a steak is way better than spending that money on a pint of icecream or bag of chips anyway.
