Good Luck

Some ppl who get this can't keep anything down at all and basically dying a slow death because of it. It used to be this surgery was a very last resort and only for the very severely overweight. I'm talking like, trying every diet and sticking too it like crazy and still not losing weight kind of thing. Now they give to just about anyone not to mention they give it to ppl that really that much overweight, like only 70 pounds over or whatever.

Freebiefan, I had this done 6 months ago. If you have any questions or want to talk, e-mail me at jennirv4967@iwon.com. I've been talking to someone else who's been contemplating it. At 6 months out, I eat sugar, can have fat, eat 4oz meals 6 times a day, and have lost 107 pounds.

No they won't give it to just anyone...they have orientations for these surgeries. The one my hubby went to tells you about the risks, what the surgery is like, and WILL NOT even consider you for the surgery unless you meet a criteria..they calcualte your height/weight and take a body mass index (maybe someone else could describe it better than me), then they go by that as to how much you should weigh, and if you are a high percentage over what you shoudl be they will do the surgery, if not they will not even consider you AT ALL.
Also before you start the surgery you have to go on a mandatory Dr. approved diet, and have to meet with a nutrionist, and have to be on this diet 4-5 months, before the surgery.
You also HAVE to excercise, and eat right, once you have the surgery. You CAN NOT continue the same eating habit yous had, and for those who did not exercise before, they will need to start.

Good surgeons won't give it to anyone. Make sure you have thoroughly checked out the doctor before proceeding.
As for the second part of your quote, that's correct. I know a few people who've had WLS who were under the misconception that they could eat whatever they wanted. All that risk was for nothing. They put the weight back on (and it's not an easy task after WLS) and then some. You have to change your whole lifestyle. It's not a quick fix.

My mom knew a lady who was much smaller than I am that was going to get it. They had delayed her surgury though because she had an abcessed tooth. I didn't say anything about them not doing the counceling and orientations and such. Just that they often offer it as a option to ppl who don't really need to go to that extreme.

To be continued
My parents have both had this done. My father is 65 and he is about 2 yrs post-op. He has lost an average of 150 lbs. He is in excellent health. He is able to eat a normal meal but in much much smaller portions.
My mother,55, is about 3 1/2 yrs post-op. She also has lost approx. 140 lbs. She is also in excellent health. She eats less then my father but she has gastric reflux prior to surgery so that is what hinders her eating.
Prior to surgery they both had multiple medical problems in addition to obesity and now they are healthier then they have been in 10+ years.
Neither of my parents had to have a pre-surgery diet, or counceling.

I think your mom's friend just went to a Dr. that was more intersted in the $. The Dr. my hubby is goind to won't even consider you unless you have high blood pressure, that is causing health problems, can't rmember the exact amount but you have to be over 150 lbs. overweight.
