    my turn to vent

I have been reading alot of vent/whine posts about people who have no money for xmas, cant afford food, don't know how they are going to pay bills etc.... my question is - if you have no money, how can you afford to be on the internet????? I know there are free isp's, do you use them or pay a monthly fee? Or perhaps instead of being on the internet all day, how about a part time job to pay some bills.

I am a single mother with a 13yr old. I work fulltime, have a new car, an apt, pay all my bills on time and I only make about 12/hr. I do get domestic relations, but my ex has overpaid on the account so I hafta wait a few months before I see a check again. I was paying $75/week in winter and $135/week in summer for child care

Please enlighten me here as I do not understand how you can be so broke but can afford trivial things like the internet. I am not singling anyone out here, I am just wondering where your priorities are.

lol nice to meet you but I refuse to vent about my money problems or any woes I might have here as I can't stand being pittied, am way too independent for that. I mystery shop and take cash surveys as an added income so I can afford those lil luxuries like cable internet

its not too hard, my Internet is on my phone bill which my mom pays for me, I have the cheapest plan, I have applied everywhere, but here in Elmira jobs are very hard to find, I have to work around hubbies schedule which means after 6 PM (unfortunately he is on call until then, and if he gets a call he goes because I would get min. wage here, and 12.00 an hour wow, that is like a gold job here, hubby has been working for coca cola for 2 years now and still doesn't make that much. (I am looking for work around his hours because the cost of care for 4 kids is outrageous) I do make gift baskets right now to help supplement to get food, but it is hard now that he is cut to 29 hours. our heating bill alone is over 180.00 a month and electric is @ 120.00 and we turn everything off as we leave a room. Maybe its higher cost of living in NY? Done know, but circumstances do happen to normal every day people that other wise "skim" by. Normally we are OK here but this is hurting us bad, we have 2 used vehicles, one is down because of the windshield (cracked all the way across) and we cant afford to fix it and cant drive it other wise we would get a ticket.) one is a used van which is a 200.00 a month payment. (yep we have icky credit so we have to pay a high payment.) Stuff happens and sometimes its hard. but we all will get by this and be better.

Not slamming you at all for the question, it is so legit, but stuff happens like I said

oh and I love my BBS Family and do feel comfortable to vent, and I am so not too proud to ask for help if it is for my kids, like me needing diapers and baby food, (my kids come first) I can do with out and I am, My glasses are broke (and I cant see a thing with out them) but my baby is top priority, then the older kiddos, then hubby then me.

I seriously dont know what I would do without my BBS family for their help.support, and understanding.

Sounds like you may have answered your own question... a lot of people do surveys and panels, in order to make extra money, so they can afford internet connections...

I've only been a member of BBS for a short time now. In the beginning I would see many people post about money difficulties and at first my thought was.... but you can afford internet access. Then I got to exploring the different boards and came to the conclusion that many use internet access to make money. Rather its surveys, or buying, selling or trading ....all of these things may help families generate additional money. So is the ability to be online a luxury at that point?

I have 2 kids that are in school, and having the option for them to do research from home for school projects, is a convience I can't do without. It saves me time and money when I don't have to shuttle them to the library. I also use the internet to stay in touch with friends and family also saves me money on my phone bill. I also comparison shop from the comfort of my home....again a time and money saving thing for me.

Also being able to be online is a sanity outlet for me, cheaper than therapy. Being a stay at home mom, it is nice knowing when the kids are making me nuts I can hop online and know someone out there have has been there and done that. Theres a great group of people here at BBS and I came to the conclusion early that alot of people consider the members of this board "family"....can you put a price on that?

    Have a great day!

    Very well said rlynn411!!

Couldn't have said it better myself. If it weren't for all the freebies, PTR,survey money, and ebay selling that I make, we would have much more of a struggle without that stuff than making the monthly internet access fee, it is not a luxury, it is an income. Fellow BBS members are like family and help each other, maybe once you are on here longer you will realize that. And $12 an hour...must be nice...

I know when we have money problems (unless you have a nice income I think everyone has money problems) I get on the internet and sell something to help me pay on my bills. My internet connection was paid in fuill for a year and it was less than $100. Also it was done at income tax time. So that is how I stay on. I totally agree with whitequeen39. My internet generates some income for us. Also $12 an hour is pretty good wage around here. My Dh doesn't make that much if you figure out his gross verses his hours he is on the road. You must be doing well for yourself. My sil is a single mom for 11 months (she is marrying in December) but this girl has it together and she only makes $8 hour. I commend you on being head smart and having your stuff together.

    P.S.

Can I just ask "Why would you vent about people posting their vents about not having money, expecially at this time of the year??" Personally I think it is nice to have a place to go to talk about it and not airing it to the town." I think it is great to have peole who will tell you different ways to save money. I personally am glad for BBS having a place I can say hey I am really having a bad week and am so worried come Friday that I will not have enought money to pay my car payment etc. At least I got it off my chest. I am not trying to be a b*tch, but I do not think you wold have a reson to complain. If you do not like to read it, HIT THE BACK BUTTON.

Sometimes it is hard to let go of a memory, especially if you remind yourself of it everyday.

I think the gist of my vent was taken wrong..I was referring to people who complain that that have no money, no food and claim they are destitute.. I understand most of us are to here to make side money, I sure am. I would think their monthly internet service fee would be well spent at the grocery store. I see and hear so many people in real life, not here, say they don't know how they are gonna make it until next week while they are smoking a name brand ciggie and carrying a Nextel phone LOL

You are doing well for yourself and your child. You obviously work for a good company and you have benefits that include medical coverage.

So what happens if that company decided to lay you off and 200 other people employed there?

Hopefully you would have some savings and along with the $125 that unemployement would give you, you could probably hold out for 3 to 4 months. And what happens when that time is up and your savings are gone? And something happens to your car, something major that isn't covered under your warrenty? And then your child gets sick. Not just the sniffles but in need of major surgery. You can't get Medicaid on short notice. So your child has surgery and you hope that you can pay those bills.

Things happen to people that eat their savings. People loose their homes not because they weren't trying. But if the major breadwinner looses their job or is injured and cannot collect Worker Comp for months, it can be a major hardship.

I feel sorry for anyone who is concerned about feeding their children or putting shoes on their feet so that they can go to school. I know that I can't change the world but I do what I can locally. When you hear people complain, it really is out of frustration because they couldn't do more.
I'd rather laugh with the sinners than cry with the saints.
