Light energy from weakest to strongest:
(IR)-R-O-Y-G-B-I-V-(UV)
When starlight is said to have "red shift", it means that it is quickly receding from the observer, and apparently shifted to a lower frquency. Similar to how the pitch of a train whistle seems to shift lower, after passing an oncoming train.
