What about faiths that don't believe in blood transfusions, etc? Should they be considered 'freaks', kooks or negligent too?

Those religions have been taken to court and yes the parents have been confronted about how they are treating their children's illness.

In extreme cases, yes they should be taken to court, etc....but sometimes people believe in a more holistic approach or non-invasive....to a certain point, that must be respected as well, especially if it interferer's with the quality of life. Yes, with children, it makes it all the more difficult.

If Travolta's child was autistic.......it's not cut and dry as to what the best treatment would be. Without truly being versed on how severe his condition was, it's hard to say. Travolta doesn't seem to me to be a neglectful parent. He had people looking after his son and his needs, perhaps it wasn't what the most common treatments for the majority with his condition, but I recall hearing he did try to address his child's needs as best he believed how.

If it was a life saving operation that this child needed but was denied...it'd be a lot easier. His condition seemed to fall into a realm of a condition where all the factors are not known, origins and treatments....we are still learning lots about autism. He was obviously healthy and cared for otherwise.

It's a hard call for me.

*Just look at all the 'debates' just here whether we should be giving our childre a flu vaccine, chicken pox and/or cervical cancer vaccine. Imagine having to consider long term medicating and it's effects on your child. It's hard.

Scientology rejects psychology all together. Look what Tom Cruise said about Brooke Shields postpartum depression. I think counselors do work with autism children to get them to be more functional. They teach them skills. I don't think you need to give the child meds if you don't like them but having them learn skills should not be against any so called religion. Only if the "religion" has a prejudice against a certain treatment will they advise you to ignore it.
