FAIRFAX – An Essex man whose license was suspended was critically injured while driving his motorcycle in Fairfax late Saturday afternoon.
Donald Shepard, 40, was being treated in the intensive care unit at Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington on Sunday after sustaining life-threatening injuries when his motorcycle slammed into the rear of a turning vehicle on Route 104.
According to police, Shepard was driving an unregistered Harley Davidson with a criminally suspended license at the time of the accident, which occurred shortly before 5:30 p.m. on Saturday.
Police said witnesses at the scene reported Shepard had been traveling at "a high rate of speed" and was attempting to pass four vehicles at one time when he slammed into to the lead vehicle, a Chevrolet Malibu driven by Donald Gray, 20, of Fairfax. According to police, Gray had activated his directional signal and started turning left into his driveway when Shepard drove into the back panel of the car and was thrown from his motorcycle.
Both men were initially transported to Northwestern Medical Center in St. Albans, though Shepard was later transferred to Fletcher Allen due to the severity of his injuries. According to police, Shepard suffered extensive internal injuries, as well as injuries to his face and two broken legs. Gray was not seriously hurt in the accident, but was taken to the hospital as a precaution, they said.
Shepard's motorcycle was destroyed in the accident, which is still under investigation.
