If I ask God for forgiveness...

originally this paragraph came from Patch from another thread:

I told myself I wasn't going to post in here again but here I am. LOL This is just my opinion and how I feel. Everyone is a sinner. God does not forgive our sins just because we go to church. When we ask for forgiveness we also have to stop doing what we asked forgiveness for. Some people think that just because they asked God for forgiveness that they can keep on doing what they were doing. For example if a thief apologized to God for what he did wrong and asked for forgiveness God would forgive him but that doesn't mean he can keep on stealing. It doesn't work that way.
---------------------------------------------------------------

Ok so if I ask God for forgiveness for something and I stop doing what I asked forgiveness for but I am still glad I did it, am I forgiven? Or do I have to truly be sorry for it and wish I had never done it? What if I never change my mind and regret I did it? Am I never forgiven and doomed for hell? Just a thought because there is something I did that I will never regret, it was a sin and I have asked forgiveness. I, myself , feel forgiven.

When you come before the Lord and you ask for forgiveness, you have to feel remorse for a heart that was filled with unGodly things. He will forgive you if you are sincere in your heart. The sincerety includes your vow to work toward being as Christlike as possible. The word Christian mean to be like Christ.

For instance, this is one way to say it. Lets say that when I was living as worldly as i wanted I dated a married man destroyed his marriage and beat his wife up and cursed his children, stabbed his dog, and got pregnant. Suppose that later I came to know the Lord and all the love He has for me. If I truely was a Christian I would feel remorse for my sins. I would always love my son or daughter, and I would not ever regret having him or her. But I would regret the pain I had caused others. God says he can read your heart. He knows how you think and feel better than you do. He IS omnipotent.

I don't know why you would ask for giveness for something you do not regret doing. There has to be some little feeling you did a wrong thing to ask for forgiveness. It may take time to sink in. You did confess it to God so that is a start and you are on the right track.

I believe there is a difference between not having regret over something we have done and being happy that we did it. An example of what I am talking about would be unwed motherhood. I had premarital sex, became pregnant and had a beautiful baby girl. I cannot regret my actions because that would be the same as regretting the outcome of those actions, my daughter. Does that make sense? I can ask and receive forgiveness for my actions all the same.

I guess really, it would all depend on our action that we seek forgiveness for. If I killed someone to protect the life or wellbeing of another, I can ask forgiveness of the sin, but should I regret the result of the action? I guess some could say in this case it is a matter of taking God's work into our own hands.

The only real answer to the question can only be found with God. We have to put the question to Him and pray for the answer.
