If you like Yoplait strawberry yogurt, Tropicana grapefruit, orange-strawberry juice, or Hershey's Good & Plenty candies, chances are you will be sucking on the red coloring extracted from the female cochineal beetle and her eggs. These insects live on cactus plants in Peru and the Canary Islands.
According to the best-selling book by Eric Schlosser, Chew on This, the female bug feeds on cactus pads, and color from the cactus gathers in her body. The bugs are collected, dried, and ground into a coloring additive. It takes 70,000 of the insects to make a pound of carmine dye, as it is known. The Food & Drug Administration doesn't require that this cochineal be identified in the ingredients. Manufacturers simply identify it as an "artificial color."

Don't ya know that the people adding the dead bug powder to the product is sitting there snickering. ;) Well at least that's how I picture it...some person that's mad at the world has that job and feels like he is getting back at everyone when he adds bugs to our food.
I've been told that the reason they bleach out flour is because there is no way you can get all the bugs out of the grains, so they just grind them up too and bleach the flour so you don't see black specks in it. I figure that's why flour and meal get bugs in it so easy...the eggs are probably already there.
And someone I know worked in a tomato factory once and they won't touch ketchup. They said everything gross goes into it. Bugs, worms, and rotten tomatoes.

I don't know if it's true or not but I was told that if you leave your flour, cornmeal, etc. in the refrigerator that the eggs won't hatch.

That really does work. When we had a convenient store we kept the flour & corn meal in the walk in cooler or in the freezer, and never had any problems again with them getting bugs. But when we kept it on the shelf it would have bugs in it within the week. I figure it was because the store was really hot at night while we were closed. We never left the A/C on, and all the refrigeration equipment was vented to the inside, so it got hotter than the blue blazes in there. Probably speeded up the eggs hatching.

Who's up for some pork chops covered in ketchup with a side of Yoplait strawberry yogurt, Tropicana grapefruit, orange-strawberry juice and Hershey's Good & Plenty candies. Oh and lets not forget those yummy hotdogs! :D
It really doesn't bother me. I mean it does but out of sight out of mind comes into play. I think if I actually seen it happen, then it would gross me out even more. lol

 I worked at Tysons Chicken in Arkansas for a bit and I will not eat chiken nuggets etc from burger king and other fast food places. It was bad enough seeing what happen to those chickens on the way in.Some of the employees get real carried away with how they treat these animals.
