Tide Rising On The Black Market: Detergent Tops With Thieves

Criminals steal the strangest things. For instance? There is apparently a national black market for Tide, of all things, to the point that one man was busted for stealing over $25,000 of the detergent over 15 months last year. And the criminals aren't stealing the soap to use as an ingredient to make meth—which was our first thought when we heard about this—though they are using it to buy meth and other drugs.
    Reports The Daily:
"We sent in an informant to buy drugs. The dealer said, 'I don’t have drugs, but I could sell you 15 bottles of Tide,'" Sprague told The Daily. "Upstairs in the drug dealer’s bedroom was about 14 bottles of Tide laundry soap. We think [users] are trading it for drugs." Police in Gresham, Ore., said most Tide theft is perpetrated by "users feeding their habit."
"They’ll do it right in front of a cop car — buying heroin or methamphetamine with Tide," said Detective Rick Blake of the Gresham Police Department. "We would see people walking down the road with six, seven bottles of Tide. They were so blatant about it."
Apparently thieves aren't nearly as interested in non-Tide brands either. They just want Tide, the dependably priced nationwide market leader which comes in a distinctive orange bottle. The thefts have become such an issue that CVS has begun locking down Tide and other detergents in some parts of the country! We haven't noticed them doing it here though...yet.
So far Procter & Gamble, which makes the detergent, doesn't know what to make of the issue. Says a spokeswoman, "We don’t have any insight as to why the phenomenon is happening, but it is certainly unfortunate." We, however, know exactly what to do. And that is to start saving our empty Tide bottles in case we ever get desperate for some quick and easy black market cash. Nobody will ever notice we just refilled 'em with water, right?

Tide Detergent Being Stolen From Stores Across the Country

Tide laundry detergent is meant to be used for household cleaning purposes, but thieves are turning it into something dirty. Authorities are reporting a spike in thefts of Tide, and in some cities they are setting up task forces where the detergent is sold to track the number of bottles in stores.

Police believe thieves are using the soap on the black market, which retails for $10-$20, to buy drugs. On the black market, Tide is often referred to as "liquid gold" and can go for $5-$10 per bottle.

Last year, in St. Paul, Minnesota, a man is alleged to have stolen $25,000 worth of Tide over 15 months before authorities captured him. Stores such as CVS have amped up security measures to prevent theft; at some locations the detergent is kept in a locked container and an employee must retrieve it for customers.

So why is Tide the only detergent being targeted? Authorities list several reasons: Tide is instantly recognizable because of its Day-Glo orange bottle; it is one of the most expensive brands of laundry detergent; and it does not have serial numbers, so it cannot be tracked.

On social media, people are calling the theft trend "bizarre" and many are blaming it on the tough economy and rising gas prices. One person tweeted that the thefts are "a result of inflation."

A spokesperson for Procter & Gamble, the manufacturer of Tide, called the thefts "unfortunate."

I don't know why this is just hitting the news now... this has been going on for years and years. Hell, we used to trade it w/ the alco bootlegger when I was in high school... cause we could buy tide but not beer! I have a cousin that works for Albertsons and it's a daily occurrence to chase a thief w/ a cart full... they never give up no matter how many times they are caught... it's never just one bottle either... it's a full cart. They do it w/ diapers too.

Could be the reason why Tide is the higher priced laundry detergent then any of the others. Largest profit margin. I stopped using Tide over a year ago, wasn't cleaning my laundry any better then a cheap brand (got a test product), cheaper brand cleaned better, cleans even better - especially if you add oxy-clean, or even oxy-clean alone.

I don't get the Oxy-Clean stuff... I tried it once... it was like washing my clothes in just water... I could still smell my husbands cologne (and he literally only sprays it once) and nothing really looked or smelled clean. I do use tide but it's cause I can't handle all the perfumie smells in the others I've tried. I can pretty much only handle the smell of downy... so we buy the tide w/ it in it.

I work retail and was talking to my boss about this. She said we get hit hard with the stealing of tide. Had no idea. I just see all the shoes that get stolen every day.
