    Opinions of "Gift Cards"

Read an article on Giving Gift Cards http://www.businessinsider.com/stop-..._campaign=1110

What do you think ? Giving and/or recieving Gift Cards ?

I generally don't like giving gift cards - seems like a cheat - too lazy or disinterested to put time or effort into actually choosing a gift for that person. HOWEVER - I love gift cards for myself and fellow readers to a bookstore... free to roam the aisles and pick out something I like. My daughter likes a certain author, but I never know whcih ones she has already. Sometimes it allows someone to "stack" several cards and buy a more expensive item then they might have gotten on their own.

I love getting gift cards and my family does too. They can shop and get what they want or need. I do them because sometimes I draw a blank on what to get someone and I want them to get something they'll really like.

I like getting gift cards if it is to stores I normally shop at or restaurants I normally eat at. I don't buy a lot of gift cards though because I don't know what stores some of the people shop at or restaurants they eat at. My granddaughter last year I gave the preschool teacher and helper a box of chocolate and a 20.00 gift card for Wal-Mart, because I had no idea what to get them.

I love love love getting gift cards!!! I don't think it is lazy at all. The fact that someone thought of me at all is wonderful. And, they had to take the time to go and purchase the card. Some people are just not creative when it comes to getting gifts for people. And, it creates a lot of stress for them. Plus...gift cards don't require me having to exchange something. I think gift cards are a win/win...for the giver and the recipient!
Never argue with an idiot. It will bring you down to his level and he’ll win because of experience.

I don't care for gift cards to specific stores. An American Express/Visa/etc. gift card is okay. I have had too many gift cards either expire, eaten up by service fees or the store go bankrupt. Either that or cash.

We got together all the parents in DS's class and had everyone put the amount they planned to spend on WalMart GC ... if you can only spend $5, the teacher's can only use so much "stuff" before it becomes clutter. The teacher ended up with almost $150 ... which she could use for gas, groceries, clothes, whatever she might need. Even if she used it for her "regular" shopping, that money in her budget saved could pay for dinner at the resteraunt of her choice.

You do realize they have had to remove alot of those items on gift cards years ago.

I personally prefer getting and giving gift cards. I have a Brother that is forbidden from buying anyone anything other than a gift card as we are all tired of taking the junk back that he buys to get something that is actually useful or wanted.

That's a good idea Jolie. I know they can only use so much stuff, that is why I went the way I did. My sis in law was a preschool teacher, and although she liked the stuff they got her she told me she likes the gift cards better. I remembered that and went with that.

I love GC's as well. Would prefer to get one than a personal gift that will sit on a shelf in a closet and then go to Goodwill. My daughter used to buy me personal gifts and every time I told her it didn't fit or it wasn't for me, she got hurt feelings (she is an adult)....even though she ALWAYS told me to let her know because then she wouldn't have wasted her money. She bought us a WII a couple years ago that came with a Mario Bros. game and I sent the game home with her and she was disappointed. I would have loved to send the WII home with her as well. We have hardly used it and now there is some kind of glitch and it doesn't work right but I am so uninterested in it that I won't bother to get it fixed.

For me a GC is THE PERFECT GIFT, especially if for Walmart or Meijer because I use them for groceries and so thankful to get them. So in my opinion, not a thoughtless lazy gift!

After reading all the responses I wish I could just go and get gift cards for everyone BUT I am such a bargain shopper I spend all year getting great gifts on the cheap and I could never come close with a gift card. Of course I get some free ones like mypoints but I still love to shop
