Credit card question
Yesterday I called to activate my Master Card that had expired & I wanted to just activate the new one that I had received in the mail. This was normal since my current card was set to expire.
At first it was normal, enter the number & last 4 digits of my social security, that is normal. What wasn't "normal" was agentleman came on the phone, asked security question & then said I had to answer a few more questions one being my full social security number. I refused to do that & hung up. Excuse me but wouldn't Master Card already have that info in their system? I'll cancel the card before I disclose that information on the phone. I asked if I could answer other identifying questions like the amount & date of my last payment or the last charge I made. Nope my full ss or nothing.

Does seem kinda odd. Most just ask for the last 4 digits of the number.
I'd tell him he can have the last 4 digits or nothing else.
I can't imagine them actually seeing your entire number on their screen.
Can you activate it online??

Maybe try calling back and see if you get a different agent and see if they ask for it.

I called the 800# that was on the sticker on the card. I reactivated mt AmEx last month & only needed the last 4 of my ss. I am calling the number on the back of the card & not the sticker.

Call your credit card customer service and ask is that standard procedure for activating your card on the phone. Thats what I'd do.

I had something very similar happen with me when I needed to change my mailing address on my BP credit card acct. Jeez I thought I was going to have to submit to a DNA test! LOL However it does seem odd to ask for the full SS #. I wouldnt give it out even if I was sure I was dealing with the correct people.

I have activated more credit cards than you could imagine over the years. I just activated 8 visa & master cards for my boss & some for our employees and everything I did was entered using the keypad and I never spoke with anyone. These cards were from Chase, Citibank, Capital One and SunTrust and never spoke with anyone on them. Some were my bosses personal cards since they are mailed to the office and they don't have his personal phone number on them so we have to activate them at the office. There is no way in hell I would give anyone my full SS # on the phone.

It seems like every time I have to activate a card I have to talk to someone. It has been a couple years since I have activated one so maybe it has changed.

That is NOT normal for MasterCard (thru MasterCard). You call, always automated UNLESS YOU want to talk to a rep, then you press the number they say. NEVER does a live person come on.

I called Master Card directly & had no problem activating the card. The gentleman that I spoke to said I had every right to not give my full social security number especially since I just happened to mention I would be informing the state attorney general of this request.
They did ask me 3 mulitple choice questions which none of the answers were completely correct. My card was activated so all is well.
