Meds for a dog to make it sleep.....
Has anyone ever given their dog medicine to make it go to sleep??
My dog is a freaking basket case lately, when there are thunderstorms around. (and we're suppose to get some doozies tonight! :O ) I'm seriously afraid she's going to have a heart attack. I'd like to find something that will make her sleep for a few hours.
I don't want to take her to the vet for this. They charge more than ME going to the doctor!

I don't think that a little benadryl would hurt your dog. I am a nurse, and in the hospital mds regularly have this as a standing order to give to children to help them rest. When I worked in a nursing home, this was given as the "sleeping pill" if requested.

I would call my vet before giving her anything. Some human medicines are toxic to animals.
Insanity is hereditary. You get it from your kids.

I've given my dog benadryl before because of all her itching (it was recomended by the vet) and she finally relaxed and went to sleep...she's just a little yorkie so the littlest amount was given.
freebies are like potato chips....you can't have just one!!

My vet tells me to give my dogs benadryl for their allergies... You give them one milligram per pound but that's not a hard and fast rule because I have a 15lb dog and I give him a 25mg pill once a day, or cut in half twice a day depending on how bad they are. I tried doing the liquid so I could make sure they got just the right amount per weight and he'd spit it out so the doc said just don't give him more than one whole tablet (however I want to do it) a day. It doesn't really knock him out the way you would think... it's more like a valium kind of reaction he gets from it... he lays around and looks high mostly.

I have my English Springer Spaniel childrens benadryl based on her weight like you would for a child. I only gave her this since this is what the vet told us to give her it was for allergies. Never made her sleepy though

Good news! They actually make doggie "anti-stress calming tablets". They carry them at pet stores, but we even found some at Wal-Mart. Basically it's an herbal remedy, but it won't hurt them and just mellows them out. It might be just what you needed for stormy nights. Hope this helps!

Thanks, I'll check this out. I tried looking at Petco and Petsmart, but couldn't find anything there.
Thanks everyone. So far, no storms. But she's acting weird, so I suspect the storms are on their way.
I've had her almost 12 yrs, and she just started acting like this the past 2 yrs.
