Good things come in all forms

Our gas got turned off on Tuesday. It is cold, down in the high 20's every night. But that's not the point. A little back ground. They said we owed $138 , grace period ended Dec 28th.
On Jan 4th, a man came out, went to our gas meter, spoke and talked to me a minute, threw a note on the porch and left. The note said he turned our gas off and told me who to call. I was sure it was a mistake. But evidently it wasn't. Our gas bill has been signed up with our bank to pay it for yrs. They said they hadn't been paid for Sept , Oct, Nov or Dec. I said if that was true it would be way more than $138. I asked for her supervisor who of course wasn't there. Trying to talk to the gas company is like trying to talk to a wall. I wasn't upset with the woman I was talking to , she was a young girl only doing her job. Anyway we froze Tuesday night. I just felt sorry for people who don't have heat. Wed was miserable but we couldn't get anyone out here until Wed night when they were going to come out and turn the gas back on. It cost $138 plus $175 to get it turned back on. At 6:30 2 men came out, stayed an hour and told us we have a GAS leak. They locked the meter like we might turn it back on. Today I got someone out here. It is going to cost $1000 to get a new line put in. We had the choice of digging up the old one or putting in another one. Where the money is going to come from heavens knows but at least we won't blow up from a gas leak. Anyway it is Thursday. They are supposed to come out tomorrow because the repair man didn't have his tools in his truck today??? I am about to freeze todeath. We are supposed to get 6-7 inches snow on Sunday night. Please pray they get it in tomorrow. Thanks.

Maybe turning it off saved you from that gas leak.

I am so sorry you guys are freezing!! I hope you have at least some space heaters I know when it is freezing like that they aren't much help, but better than nothing. But, as you say, at least you guys aren't going to get blown to bits.

I didn't know you had to pay to fix gas leaks I thought it was their responsibility. Thats scary because thats a lot of money to have to come up with all of a sudden. I hope they get it worked out and get your gas on very soon. I hope ya'll have a way to stay warm. Maybe you can stay the night with family or friends till you get it back on.

WOW! I hope you get it turned back on soon.

In my area, its against the law for the gas co to turn off the utilities if the temps are below freezing.

I hope it works out soon for you.

If your account was set up as a direct payment from the bank, didn't they send you notices of non-payment for 4 months?? I hope you can get reimbursed for the $175 which sounds like an error on someone's part (bank or gas co.).

I think it depends where the leak is as to who pays to fix it.

I have electric heat & that is taken directly out of my checking account but I still receive a statement from the utility company. I am really sorry Sondra. I am guessing that Alabama doesn't have energy assistance programs like they do in the northern regions. In PA they do have emergency grants to help fix these sort of troubles.
