Underage Drinking
How are the kids getting fake ID's these days? Is it just like in the movies where some creepy dude makes them in his parent's basement? When I was a minor, the only people that had fakes that I knew about were those who just got one from somebody who looked very much like them.
This question probably seems pretty random, but a minor I know has died an alcohol related death, and I made the mistake of reading every article I could find online about it, along with reader comments. There is much debate over the bartender's responsibility to #1 spot a fake ID and #2 determine when to stop serving.
I come from the school of thought of personal responsibility as the biggest issue with it all, but had she killed anyone but herself, then I think I would feel more culpability lies with the bartender.
I am feeling anxiety as I am so fearful of my son turning 16 and riding with friends and the chance of him driving drunk or riding with a drunk driver. I wish there was a magic way of knowing I could convince him how terrible all of that is.
We had us, we had him, now we have everything.

Oh boy, I dont know. The point of a fake ID is to try and make it as real as possible to not get caught, so I dont know how much I would personally hold a bartender responsible for (I dont know legally).
As a parent you just need to educate your kids. Tell them the dangers of it, tell them that you understand that something might happen and they may end up in a situation that they werent expecting but to NEVER get into a car with someone who's been drinking, that YOU will come get them, no matter the time of night.
It is scary. Im sorry for the loss of the young woman you knew.

Sadly, my daughter has already experienced several students/friends of her school that have died from drinking and driving. And also sadly, kids STILL do it, they think they are invinsible at this age in their life.
She was deeply troubled and hurt about the ones that have died, I am hoping that it hit home with her and that she will be wise in her decisions.
As for the bar situation, if the ID looked good enough, it's really not the bartenders fault. Although I wish that bartenders would stop serving, or make definite sure that the person has a designated driver, if he/she sees the person getting drunk. It always amazed me how people will be at the bar and they will be getting drunk out of their mind, and still being served...... then at the end of the night, the bartender says something like, good night, be safe.... DUH!!

As the mother of an underage drinker, I can tell you, you never quit worrying.
My son is 37 now. The call that I had expected most of his life came Aug 12,08. It was not a surprise call, it was a finally here call and it came from hhis wife to tell me he'd had a wreck 80 miles from home. I could write a whole book about underage drinking. You can talk until your head turns backward and they are going to do what they want to do. I can tell you that peer pressure is very very strong. My son was alone, going 140 in his BMW driving to his sisters 100 miles away. He is my miracle. God saved him for a reason but so far He has not shown us what or why. No one else was involved. He was taken to a hospital and declared DOA but they found life signs and transferred him to a trama center. Yes he was 36 when this happened and was thinking suicidal thoughts while driving but this all started years ago. He prefers prescription drugs over alcohol but uses alcohol when he can't legally get the drugs. I have hinted at this on here but never came out and said it. As for people with alcohol and drug abuse problems, they are someone's child and there is a mother and father out there who love them dearly. My son has been a bartender too and he says the fake ID's out now are so good you can't tell them. Think of the technology today that we have.
Even parents who thought they were doing the right thing by having the kids drink at their house in a safe environment are now finding themselves in trouble with the law. I don't know the answer either but I do wonder if a man is old enough to die for his country, maybe he should be old enough to drink. That is not the same thing as being mature enough. But I don't think the babies dying for our country are mature enough either.

When I was in school there was a guy a couple years under me that would make them at home on his computer. LOTS of kids had them, I never did, or needed too. But a good computer program can make them. This was 16 years ago, so one could only imagine how easy it is now....

Many bars/clubs I used to go to, had signs posted that said they had the right to refuse serving alcohol to anyone. I do think the bartenders should take some type of responsibility. If someone walks up to the bar and is totally wasted, they should refuse to give them anymore.
I've seen signs posted at sporting events too.
As for getting fake ID's.......anything can be made or purchased off the internet now. There's really NOTHING you can't buy online.

Thank you so much for your honesty in telling your story, and sharing information. Amazing that your son was spared, and hopefully he finds it within himself to make good choices.
We had us, we had him, now we have everything.
