a little computer help please
dh brought home a computer today that someone gave him. She told him that it was on one day and it started smoking (black smoke if that matters) and it turned off. It will not turn back on now.
When dh got home we took the tower apart and tried to see what was going on. Well it has some black smoke stuff inside on the fans and a few other parts but mostly on the (not sure what it is called...) the port that the monitor plugs into on the back of the tower.
We also noticed that the monitor when not plugged into the back of the tower will flash that notice saying to check the connections or something like that but when we plug it into the tower the screen goes black and does not do anything.
Does anyone know what we might be able to do to fix it without taking it to a shop? I can't afford that right now but would love to get it working for ds.

just a thought but if you're putting the monitor into the port then it goes black the video card could be fried.

no, that would be the motherboard or the power supply. try changing the power supply first it's the cheaper of the 2.

Ok stupid question time lol do you mean change the power cord?
The computer gets power, when i push the power button the lights flash and the fans turn on but that is it.
So would that mean it is possibly the motherboard? If so how hard is it to change? where would I get one and are they expensive?
Sorry for all the questions

Power supply is easy to change and pretty inexpensive (around $ 50.00). Motherboard is a expensive part and if it is bad - I would chuck the entire thing. You can go to Best Buy or HHGregg or to a local computer repair/shop to purchase the parts.

sounds to complicated for me, if you can't afford to take it to someone and have them look at it, I would chunck it (that's me of course...)!!

Dh said something about checking around online and seeing if we could find a tower for a good price. Maybe find one on craigslist. Thank you for the advice and help.
