Besides watching the amount of sweets you eat...that is a given...watch out for your intake of starchy foods, especially breads.

Cut your carb intake. Right away. Get at least 30 minutes of exercise a day. Try not to stress over it, as that will make your blood sugar go up. Drink plenty of water. Actually, the South Beach diet is a good one to follow.
Really, the best thing you can do is lose weight. Even 10 pounds will make a world of difference. I speak from experience.
Good luck to you. Hang in there!

CONTACT YOUR DR. AND REQUEST TO GO THROUGH THE DIABETIC CLASSES. It is required in most states. Then have your Dr. set up a appointment with a nutritionist that will advise you on the best course of action regarding what to eat and what to avoid. Remember that carbohydrates are what keeps you from having peaks and valleys in your blood sugar throughout the day. So go call the Dr. as you can see from this thread already you will get conflicting info on the internet. They will probably also advise you to start doing at least 20 minutes a day of exercise.
Forgot to add - get a blood glucose meter - most Dr.'s offices have them to give out. Check with your insurance - I know that mine counts One Touch and FreeStyle test strips as a generic - saves a ton of money by using those brands.

The companies will send you a free monitor if you call them. I also attended the nutrition classes and that helped me alot. Like the others said, watch the carbs and the sugars. I have been trying to loose weight ever since I found out I am diabetic. Loosing weight has helped me. Stress and being sick will also make your sugar levels high. I've had two surgeries since finding out and each time my sugar level went up. Also take care of your feet.

If you are not on medicine for it , take cinnamon capsules , bought at Walmart or somewhere like that and definitely follow advice above. Did anyone mention exercise lowers blood sugar?

yes please watch your feet, any cut actually. my dad has high blood sugar and he almost had to have 1/2 of his foot amputated, thank goodness they only took a toe! starches are bad to eat, so try to steer clear of those. He's also found that taking a 15-30 min walk everyday helps it stay down.
You, yes you, lemme see YOU walk on water!!

I just went to the south beach diet site online, am going to start phase one of the diet as soon as I buy groceries, probably later this week. Thanks for all the advice.

The first step is, take a moment to take a deep breath. Diabetes IS a serious medical condition, but it isn't the end of your world. Your life is going to have to change, but you are going to be able to eat a lot of your favorite foods, just in moderation. Also, here is a a Type 2 diabetes meal planner. http://www.mydrs.com/data/files/Type...ealPlanner.pdf
Really quick substatution, replace white bread for wheat, I personally hated wheat bread with a passion when I was first diagnosed, three years later after trial and error I found a brand I liked. Start walking, just 30 minutes a day can make a world of difference. If I can be of any help, please feel free to PM me.
