Great Black Wasp
Is huge and actually blue. My son found one in our basement by boxes of my moms stuff. It was over 2" long and scary looking. I hope we do not have a nest.

No. He killed it. But in researching what it was, I fear it may have been stunned. I read stories where people thought they were dead but then after as long as 20 minutes came to and attacked. I need to ask him what he did with it when he gets up.

We get the blue wasps (mud dauber) all the time here.. We don't have a nest but they seem to like our black eyed susans... They are really pretty

Unless you have an unfinished basement, you have nothing to worry about as this species burrows in the ground to make their nests.

Oh yes and it is wonderful when you are cutting the grass and run over their hole. I had nearly all my clothes stripped off by the time I hit the back door after running over one of them about 10 yrs ago. I don't cut grass anymore.

Oh my! I had mowed the lawn on friday. Saw this wierd thing by the rose bush and wondered how the boys could have missed it. Then I saw some huge crickets. But I am sure if it was their nest I'd have been bombarded. Now to go look up what their nests look like.
