Just a word of advice...
If your cat is missing for over a year, please don't give anyone your old bag of dry cat food! We have a friend whose cat disappeared well over a year ago and they were nice enough to give us the rest of their cat food. We finished off the bag we already had opened and unrolled the bag they gave us. OMG! You should have seen all the little moth-like creatures that flew out at us! That was almost 2 weeks ago and we're still killing them in the garage! Luckily we didn't bring the cat food into the house!

OMG, I had those things in a bag of bird seed I bought. It was terrible, over a year ago and I still see a moth every now and then.
Luckily, I went back to the store and told the manager. He pulled all the seed from the shelf and gave me a $50. gc.

Meal moths....they are horrible. Once infested, it is a horror to rid your home of them. They usually come in bird seed from the store (always keep your bird seed container closed and freeze the seed first) sometimes other food items as well.
Home depot sells a pest strip for meal moths and it does work.

Yep. I always keep the seed in a container in the basement, they escaped when I opened a "new" bag. It hasn't happened since then and they are pretty much gone, maybe 1 or 2 a month. I think of them a visiting cat toys that don't get to leave.
For all the seed I use, I'd have to get a fridge just for the containers.

I get meal moths because I breed meal worms as lizard food and the moths are an unfortunate side effect of doing that...

A friend of mine raises birds, so he goes through a ton of seeds. You don't have to keep them frozen, but just freeze them first for a specified amount of time.....I believe he said it was less than a week....so you don't need a 'huge' freezer.

OMG! Yrs ago when I was on maternity leave, I had left a box of crackers in my office. My office had a door and no one had been in there for weeks. When I returned I was BOMBARDED with meal moths flying out of my office! The entire place had them flying around for months!!! I would open up my desk drawer and out would fly about 50 of them every day!!!! It was horrible! YUCK

Eww yuck! Honestly, if the bag had been open for over a year it's no good anyways. They should have thrown it away instead of giving you that headache. I know they were trying to be nice, but animal food does have an expiration. LOL
