I do not know the answer.

Would not want a 6 yo to die at grade school recess because of a severe PA reaction while playing jump rope or kick ball.

Interesting reading what other schools are doing with the PA issues.

The PA child is in 1st grade. My son is in 2nd. They way are schools are we have a kindergarten center. Just K goes there. Then 1st & 2nd are in one school, then 3rd-6th. The elementary schools (ie all of the above) went nut free because of they share buses and the food for the lower grades is prepared by the cafateria in the upper elementary.

They could set up a separate area for either PB&J kids or for the allergic child to sit with friends whose lunch would not harm her. My goodness, will they go so far as to say none of the students can have PB for breakfast, because they may breath on the child? I would say they should work out a safe compromise.
In the letter sent home it did say if you are to give your child nut containing foods for breakfast/before school to make sure that you "disinfect" your child's hands.

One thing us "other mothers" have been discussing too, is the public playground, the grocery store etc. The whole outside world can not go nut free.

I surely do not want this child to die...And I will do my part...But if it were my child I would seriously consider homeschooling before I would rely on everyone else's parents to make sure my kid didn't come in harms way from nuts. Some parents only put in the bare minimum to raise their own children, let alone care about someone elses.

My son is in 1st grade and his school is peanut free. There are 2 children within his school that have severe peanut allergies....one airborne. My son's classmate is a sister to the boy with airborn PA and the parents came and talked to the students about the allergy and my son understands what could happen, and I don't have issues with the decision the school made by going peanut free....it's about the safety of the children that have the allergies. Some students with food allergies, especially those who can go into anaphylactic shock ie. PA, qualify for a 504 plan, which by law requires the school to provide for a safe healthy learning environment for that/those students hence the peanut ban. I think it's just a matter of time before the peanut ban is enforced in all schools.

As for alternative lunch ideas I dont really know what to tell you since your children dont care for lunchmeat..there is a soy nut butter as well as sunflower butter which was already mentioned. You talked about the sodium...I think there are lunchmeats now being labeled as low sodium, if you could get them to eat it. Do they eat anything like chicken, tuna, or egg salad? How about different kinds of pasta salad like one with chunk chicken breast.....I don't know just throwing out ideas....I'm glad my kids arent too picky about what they eat...the only thing they refuse is fish, it is alot easier for me when my kiddo wants to take his lunch.
