    Buying a new car??

We are thinking about buying a new car because with current incentives we could get more than what our vehicle is worth (and we were thinking about getting one next year anyway). What I want to know is there a way to find out how much a new vehicle costs the dealership? I would like to know what our wiggle room is for negotiating the sticker price.

We are looking at a Dodge Caliber SXT or RT. If we go with the RT chances are it will have to be ordered...would that affect negotiating?

TIA for any info or tips

Well first of all have you checked into what the requirements are for the $ 4500.00 gov't rebate? The trade in car must be a 2001 or older and the new car must get 18 mpg. It is so convenient that the dealerships are leaving that part out of their ads.

One way to find out is check somewhere like Car-Max - they do have new car locations. Not sure if they still have a Chrysler/Dodge dealership. You can also look on kbb.com (kelly blue book) for estimates. If you are ordering one you are probably not going to get the incentives you would if you bought one off the lot. I know they knocked 10k off my last Jeep since I bought a 2007 in 2008 - it was brand new and the only difference between the 07 & 08 was the price. There is virtually no way to find out how much a dealeship pays for a vehicle - they aren't going to tell you that and when they show you the "invoice" for the vehicle that has the profit already in it from the factory.

What I have done in the past is look on the Car-Max site and find how much I can buy the vehicle I want from them then go to my local dealership and haggle down to the Car-Max price. I have no problems getting up and walking out of a dealership if they won't come down to my price. I guarantee you that you will NOT get to your car before the salesman can magically drop the price to what you want. However, if you are looking for a specific car with x options and color then you have thrown a lot of your bargaining footing out the window.

we recently bought a new car, the salesman said it had been on the lot a while because it was a stick and no one wanted it. He was a good salesman, (good at giving us a deal), and said that X was the ASKING price, but right now a person could get a car for a lot less.

Also, you have to show proof the car was titled to you for the past year and that you have had insurance on the car for the past year. What that matters I have no idea.

We seem to qualify, but I do have to go to the town office to get copies of our old registration.....we never save those. Also got to find out if they need our old insurance cards or if the policy will do. I save the policies, but no the old cards.

Really wanted to wait another year, but we will end up getting like $7 in credit between the gov. & dealer incentive and that is more than the darn thing is worth..I am afraid if we wait we will only get trade in value which will go down more by then.

Still not fully decided....I hate to have another payment and the mountaineer doesn't even have 100,000 miles yet. Of course DH has been after me for a year already because he wants a new one!! They are shiny!! LOL
