Thank you for posting this, maybe having a few of us go through it together will be the kick in the a$s I need. Thanks to all the former smokers for speaking out too.I almost feel like I "can't"quit,if you guys did it then maybe I can too.

This was exactly my thought. There is power in numbers. We can do this, I know we can.
DH went cold turkey on New Years, he is thrilled that I'm quitting now too. Our home will be Smoke-Free! Plus maybe I will be able to get a good job around here. It's got to the point no one will hire you if you smoke. And yes they test you.
I only smoke in the computer room. So my first task to help with my hands is to wash down the walls in here. And with the money I usually spend, I am painting in here too. That should keep me busy for a day or two. I am starting a very long list of things to do. I am going to keep telling myself I can't have a smoke until the list is complete. I figure by the time the list is complete I won't want a smoke lol. Plus I am going to clip pictures of well to do kids and hang them around. Each time I think I can't make it I will look at these kids and remember their parents can't afford to take them to the dr on their own lol. Ohhhh maybe I can find some pics of politicians with children, that would be even better lol.
And I've decided I will switch to Tea for awhile instead of coffee. Get it "Tea" lol. I am going to carry a Tea Bag around everywhere with me, to remind me of the Taxes and our wasteful government. I am done supporting them and their friends! This is one tax they can't make me pay!
If anyone has anymore ideas, I could use them. I'm sure we all could. What doesn't work for one may work for the next. So throw us "quitters" all the ideas you can think of. Our bodies and wallets will thank you.
I can feel my life changing already for the better.

I wish it were as simple as mind over matter -- unfortunately, nicotine is a drug... and it's an addiction and definitely not mind over matter.

Good luck to all of you. I've never smoked, hate the smell of it. The last office I worked in, they smoked it and it was terrible.

I agree, to a degree, but like any addition it can only be beaten if the mind is stronger than the addiction. Any addiction can be beaten, but you have to want it more than you want the drug.

it is mind over matter, having to do with bringing your hands up to your mouth to take a drag off of the cigarette, you just need to find something else to with your hands, take a straw and if you feel the urge to smoke, chew on the straw or something else similar to that. It is just trying to find a way to occupy your hands when you want a ciggy.

I have quit more times than I can count, but Ive always back-slid. In the last year Ive had numerous health issues and know full well that the few cigs I "sneak" every now and then are certainly not helping.
Count me in. This time I am better prepared. Dback posted about a book called The Easy Way To Stop Smoking by Allen Carr. (thank you Tami ) I went to Amazon to order it and also ordered a homepathic medicine called Smoking Withdrawal by NatroBio. Its supposed to help with cravings, nervous tension, irritability & helps detoxify. I have just received both of these things and feel I have a better chance this time of making it stick. Both were around $18. b4 shipping, if anyone is interested.
Good Luck to All

Ok so its our last weekend as smokers!!!!
I just want to say good luck to everyone whos going to give this a shot.
What if anything have those quitting started doing to prepare for this? I've stocked up on lifesavers, gum and I started taking sam-e for mood lol figured it couldnt hurt to have a little extra help! Here are a few tips from my box of patchs:
1. Tape a list of your reasons for quitting on a mirror. Go over them daily.
2. Tell one or two of your friends and your family. Ask them for specific help that you think you will need from each of them.
3. is support program-which I suppose is each of us!
4. Know your triggers and practice coping strategies.
5. change your routines. for example sit in a different chair, somewhere you havent smoked.
6. Plan how you will spend all the money you save by not smoking.
7. Freshen your enviornment. On the day before your quit date, clean your clothes, car and any rooms where you spend alot of time.
8. Throw away remaining cigarettes, ashtrays and lighters the night before your quit date.
9. Have plenty of low-calorie snacks available.

Jackie Blu, the book will do it for you if you just read it! I am so happy you ordered it. I want someone else to preach the miracles of that book..lol
I didn't have to make a lot of changes at all but I do remember smoking a whole pack of smokes in one night because I was finishing the book and was going to wake up to no smoking..lol
He tells you to keep smoking while you read!

I just quit on March 15th and it hasn't been as bad as prior attempts. I wish everyone luck! If I can do it, anyone can do it. I have people I know that are realy shocked I am doing this because I have always had such a hard time with even the idea of quitting.

I personally don't think it has anything to do with the hand to the mouth, and I'm a smoker. Smokers will understand this, you need a smoke when that feeling in your throught/lungs start, you know, you take that deep breathe, in and out, and you can feel that feeling of nicotine and needing a cigarrette. Also with your nerves and that frustration feeling that as soon as you light up and take a drag, it soothes everything.
Right now at this time I don't have the will power, but I can start to feel myself wanting to think about quitting. So good luck to all of you, and maybe soon myself.

One thing that helped me so tremendously was Allen Carr's book. It took away the anxiety over quitting. It made my whole mind set about smoking change. I would recommend that any smoker read the book. You don't have to quit if you don't want to or don't feel ready. I first read the book 2 years before I quit. It took a few readings for me, but it really changed my mind set completely. I did still use the patch, even though Allen Carr does not advocate using any NRT. Just take what you need, and leave the rest as far as advice and tools to quit smoking. Any positive step you take is a good one. I also have an "e-cigarette" that I very occasionally use with a no nicotine cartridge. Anything to stay away from cigarettes!
