    halushka recipe?

I need a recipe for halushka. I know the ingredients but not quite sure of exactly how to make it. It has bacon, noodles, butter, cabbage, and pepper. Not quite sure of how much butter. This is how I think it goes.

    1 lb. bacon chopped
    1 head of cabbage chopped
    1 bag of noodles
1/2 to 1 stick of butter

Cook bacon. Add cabbage to bacon when bacon is almost done. Boil noodles. Drain the bacon and cabbage. Add cooked noodles to the bacon/cabbage mixture. Add butter and mix until the butter is melted.

I don't think you drain off all the bacon grease, though. I'm just not sure. I've only made it once and that was a few years ago.

    TIA

My friend from Romania taught me how to make this, Here's my recipe...

    1 lb bacon
    1 lb wide egg noodles
    1/2 onion, chopped
1 head cabbage, sliced about 1/4 inch wide
    1/2 stick butter
    salt and pepper
    sour cream (optional)

Cook pasta according to package directions. Drain and set aside. Fry bacon & drain. Meanwhile, melt butter over medium heat. Add onions and cook until translucent. Add cabbage and cook until wilted. Be careful not to brown the cabbage. If the mixture is too dry, add more butter. Add the noodles & bacon to the cabbage/onion mixture and toss to coat. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Some serve it with sour cream but I usually don't. HTH.

Close enough. Dd needs it for school. Something about their heritage and a food festival. I've only made it once and that was years ago. The kids love it but dh calls it a heart attack in skillet. Something about the bacon grease and the butter. lol

Thanks hippie. I knew someone would come through for me.

I never put bacon in mine. I just use cabbage, butter and noodles.

Some people use bacon, others use sausage. I like it with the bacon the best. Just kinda greasy that way.

I use half a pound of butter, and I do not drain the bacon/cabbage.

I brown the bacon. Add 2 sticks butter, one chopped onion, and the chopped cabbage. Cover and simmer on low heat until cabbage is tender. Add al dente pasta ( I use bow ties). Stir and brown over low heat uncovered. Salt and pepper to taste.

This is the recipe from a polish neighbor many years ago.

I dont use noodles, we use potato dumplings. Also, we use 10 pounds of bacon, 25 pounds of shredded cabbage and about 8 pounds of potatoes lol

we use bacon and don't drain it and only use about 2 tbsp butter. with the bacon grease, I don't think you really need all that butter. when it was made by my Hungarian MIL she never used butter. they were very poor and could not afford the butter, it was just about as good without it.
