I went through this last april. I had a 14 year old cocker spaniel, who was going blind, was deaf and smelled horrible. She would not let anyone near her, couldnt pet her, groom her, nothing. She would eat and go outside but just didnt seem to have much life as all she wanted to do was sleep. I kept putting it off because I had gotten her when she was 6 weeks old and was very attached to her. I put it off for myself and ended up causing her more pain, she started having seizures and was in horrible pain for 2 days before i could get vet appt. to be put down. Hindsight is 20/20 but deep down i always knew I should have set the date...it would have saved alot of pain. I know that i gave her a good life but even when she was in pain it was a hard call to make.
No one can make the final decision for you...but know there are people around who can help you get through this

s I don't know what I'd do in your situation, but I'm sure I'd be thinking along the same lines. I also know how guilty and selfish I'd feel, but it sounds like its pretty well time if she's blind, deaf falling down and stinking and not wanting to be groomed. Here's to hoping your sons aren't jerks about it!

    Hugs to you.
    What a hard decision.
As my vet once told me, it's part of the deal.

Once the quality of life is gone and it sounds like your dogs is then the best thing for her would to be put to sleep. It is hard but it is harder on her to suffer.
handle a stressful situation like a dog If you can't eat it or hump it. Piss on it and walk away.

You know in your heart what the most humane thing to do is. You are not doing right by her by letting her suffer so much. Your sons are thinking with their hearts, not their minds and arent there day to day to see her suffer.

    It is time.

Tami I'm sorry your going through this. I have never had a pet as an adult but I can only imagine how hard it is to put down a pet that's been around so long. It does sound like it's about time to put this dog down..most everyone is in agreement on it. I don't think your horrible for feeling like your dog may be too old and suffering, just the opposite, it shows you are a very kind and caring person.
