Medical insurance question?...
dot has to go to a new dr next week and they called to set up the appointment. varified insurance card coverage and then asked for dot's social security number to varify further medical insurance coverage.
I refused to give dots ssn stating that the office DOES NOT need the information to varify coverage anymore. The receptionist was ticked. But I still refused.
A few years ago it was an insurance thing, but in the last 3 years the insurance company's stopped requiring ssn for varification due to fraud and protection of everyone in general.
How do I turn the office in for violations?

I certainly don't know but aren't you a nurse? I would think in your field you could find out the answer fairly easy. Good luck.

I don't think that they are in violation of anything. They send bills to collections if not payed and I'm fairly certain that is the reason they ask for social security numbers. I just had to refuse to give my husbands SSN on Tuesday and will probably have to do it again on Friday (I was the patient but he is the "responsible party" for my bill)... but they all ask for it, I would think if there was a law that the offices asking for it would be few and far between.

Our insurance and drs offices still require the ssn for verification.

Whenever I have to call my insurance company for anything it's one of the first things that is asked. It really doesn't bother me that they ask. They could find it anyway by looking up the rest of my information. It's just easier for them to put the social security number in the computer and then it brings up the person's information rather than them having to enter name, birthdate and all of that.

Business can ask for verification of who you are, and the best source is the SSN. Many businesses (including private drs) have to prove that they knowing accepted insurance for a patient and have proof of who that patient is.
A photo government ID (like a driver's license) school ID, SSN, and such are used as ways to provide proof of who you are and that they treated the right person.
It is not illegal to use a SSN or even ask for it. Many insurance companies went away from SSN use, butit was a industry choice, not a legal battle. Medicare still uses it.

my mds office always asks for a ss number. i don't think they are in violation of anything. How can an office make sure of anything if they don't have that number? Anyone could come in, claiming to be someone else, and use a stolen insurance card and get medical treatment.

called insurance company and they state SSN is NOT required to varify insurance coverage. All they need is the insurance cards. So once they copy the card they can access coverage. However, some company's still use SSN numbers but should know which one's really require the SSN just by company name alone. AKA search the computer data base.

We ask for both in my office. Some insurances still ask for both. It just depends.
I would give both. Even when the insurances changed over to not using your SS, when you check benefits some will ask, more so when you have more than one family member on a plan.
