Talking They're planning a hot time in Hell on Tuesday

Hell, Mich., heats up for 6-6-6 party
Sun Jun 4, 7:04 AM ET

HELL, Mich. - They're planning a hot time in Hell on Tuesday. The day bears the date of 6-6-06, or abbreviated as 666 — a number that carries hellish significance. And there's not a snowball's chance in Hell that the day will go unnoticed in the unincorporated hamlet 60 miles west of Detroit.

Nobody is more fired up than John Colone, the town's self-styled mayor and owner of a souvenir shop.

"I've got `666' T-shirts and mugs. I'm only ordering 666 (of the items) so once they're gone, that's it," said Colone, also known as Odum Plenty. "Everyone who comes will get a letter of authenticity saying you've celebrated June 6, 2006, in Hell."

Most of Colone's wares will sell for $6.66, including deeds to one square inch of Hell.

Live entertainment and a costume contest are planned. The Gates of Hell should be installed at a children's play area in time for the festivities.

"They're 8 feet tall and 5 foot wide and each gate looks like flames, and when they're closed, it's a devil's head," Colone told The Detroit News for a Saturday story.

Mike "Smitty" Hickey, owner of the Dam Site Inn, wasn't sure what kind of clientele would show up Tuesday.

"We're all about having fun here. I don't think we're going to get the cult crowd, the devil worshippers or anything like that," said Hickey, whose bar's signature concoction is the Bloody Devil, a variant of the Bloody Mary.

Colone, meanwhile, has been in touch with radio stations as far away as San Diego and Seattle that are raffling off trips to Hell in honor of 6-6-6.

The 666 revelry is just the latest chapter in the town's storied history of publicity stunts, said Jason LeTeff, one of its 72 year-round residents — or, as the mayor calls them, Hellions or Hell-billies. But LeTeff wasn't particularly enthused.

"Now, here I am living in Hell, taking my kids to church and trying to teach them the right things and the town where we live is having a 6-6-6 party," he said.

According to the town's semiofficial Web site, there are two leading theories about how Hell got its name.

The first holds that a pair of German travelers stepped out of a stagecoach one sunny afternoon in the 1830s, and one said to the other, "So schoene hell" — roughly translated as, "So bright and beautiful." Their comments were overheard by some locals and the name stuck.

The second holds that George Reeves was asked after Michigan gained statehood what he thought the town he helped settle should be called, and reportedly replied, "I don't care, you can name it Hell if you want to." The name became official on Oct. 13, 1841.

6/6/06 could be a devil of a day - or not
Jennifer Brooks - Gannett News Service
    Jun. 5, 2006 12:00 PM

WASHINGTON - There's a name for it - hexakosioihexekontahexaphobia - fear of the numbers 666.

If you look hard enough, you start seeing 666s everywhere. In bar codes at the supermarket - mark of the beast? In product logos. Encoded in the names of the famous and the infamous. And, of course, on the calendar.

June 6, 2006. Sixth day of the sixth month of the sixth year of this century. Spooky, no?

The Bible itself has done the math, and six-six-six adds up to evil. That's the number, according to the Book of Revelation, by which the Beast, the Antichrist, will be known.

This could be one devil of a day. Or not.

"There's nothing to get upset about," said Baptist preacher Tim LaHaye, author of the "Left Behind" series based on the prophesies of Revelation. The final book in the series, "The Rapture," is being released, naturally, on June 6. "Everyone knows that the rapture event will not take place on 06/06/06 because Jesus prophesied that no one knows the day or the hour of His return."

Still, when the Bible puts a numerical value on evil, people are going to get squeamish. On June 5, 2003, New Mexico renumbered its share of the 190-mile-long U.S. Highway 666 -sometimes called "The Devil's Highway" - into the less ominous Highway 491, with Colorado and Utah following suit. The old designation was scaring away tourists, state officials said.

If the world doesn't end tomorrow - and since it didn't end on June 6, 1906 or in the year 666, we're probably safe - there will be plenty of other things to do. There's a rare Tuesday opening for the remake of "The Omen," a 1976 horror film.

Afterward, you could cruise through a maternity ward and check newborns for the mark of the beast. Or do the math on famous names to see if they add up to 666 - as Bill Gates III does, if you do the calculations in ASCII computer text.

The Church of Satan will be holding a high mass at the Steve Allen Theater in Los Angeles, just to mess with people's heads. "We are not afraid of 666, nor do we hold it in any particular regard," notes a press release on the church's Web site. "Historically, 666 is the name of Emperor Nero reduced to its numerological value ... Satanists think this is quaint."

What's really happening, said Joe Barnhart, professor of philosophy and religion studies at the University of North Texas, is that people are searching for patterns and meaning in a world where both may seem in short supply. "People are just trying to make sense of their cosmos," Barnhart said.

Satanic '666' brings forth Hollywood 'Omen'
    by Tangi Quemener
Mon Jun 5, 12:28 PM ET

LOS ANGELES (AFP) - The date 6-6-6 -- June 6, 2006 -- is the devil's day for many Christians, and Hollywood is not letting them forget it with the release Tuesday of the horror remake "The Omen".

The legendary fright flick is coming out in a new version to mark the modern calendar's parallel with the triple six, the biblical number associated with Satan.

Directed by John Moore and starring Julia Stiles, "The Omen" revives the 1976 horror classic about a man who discovers his son to be the devil incarnate.

The boy, Damien, has a 666 birthmark on his head. "His Day Will Come," the film's publicity threatens.

The film was originally entitled "The Omen 666", playing on the designation for the devil found in the bible's Book of Revelations, also known as the Apocalypse.

"This calls for wisdom. If anyone has insight, let him calculate the number of the beast, for it is man's number. His number is 666," it says.

But the studio 20th Century Fox pulled back from the first title. "We didn't want to overkill the 666 with the title but it's clearly going to be a big part of the promotion," Fox International's sales and strategy director Craig Dehmel told Variety in April.

But it is the latest commercial tease on Christian beliefs and superstitions to come out of Hollywood. Last month "The Da Vinci Code" swept into theaters worldwide on the back of a campaign taunting Christians with a nefarious alternative view of their church's history.

"Normally, a marketer is going to be very very wary about using the devil," said Robert Thompson, professor of television at Syracuse University in New York.

"But 666 has really emerged in the popular culture as a funny thing you bring up when you're talking about a kid misbehaving on the playground. You say, 'I bet this one has a 666 on his scalp.'"

"It's almost done in a joking kind of way. But at the same time it still gives people kind of creeps. I know some very rational people who get very nervous when their phone number, their license plate has a 666 assigned."

"It makes perfect sense to release it that day," Thompson said of "The Omen".

"I'm sure there are people out there who think that's evil and satanist, but that's just a marketing ploy and it's working."

June 6 has sparked other commercial ploys. Gambling website BetUS.com is offering 10-1 odds that the Apocalypse will happen on Tuesday, noting that no one can ignore recent disasters like wars, the tsunami, terrorists, nuclear threats, and earthquakes.

And the Michigan town with the abyss-mal name of Hell is throwing a party with music and prizes for the best costumes, and offering ice cream at 66 cents, according to the town website. "Come on out to Hell for a good time," it says.

Undoubtedly, too, US radio stations will be filling the airwaves with paeans to Lucifer, like the rolling Stones classic "Sympathy for the Devil", the Charlie Daniels Band country hit "The Devil Went Down to Georgia", or Beck's "Devil's Haircut".

While much of the attention to the ominous date is just old-fashioned marketing, with the rise of conservative evangelical Christians in recent years, more attention is being paid to superstitious and tantalizing biblical tales like Revelations.

This was credited for the change of the designation for the so-called highway to hell, Route 666, in the southwest United States.

The road stretching through often hellishly hot Navaho Indian territory between Arizona and Utah was renamed Route 491 in 2003, lifting the stigma around it -- even though the Navahos saw no numerical significance in the old name.

But some said the change was only to solve the problem of constant theft of the old 666 signs by Satanists.

Romania strengthens cemetery security on 666 day
Tue Jun 6, 12:14 PM ET

BUCHAREST (AFP) - Security measures have been strengthened in Romanian cemeteries as authorities feared Satanists could use the date 06/06/06, evoking the so-called "number of the beast", to stage attacks.

"Given the significance this date could have for some, we decided to double the number of agents assigned to protecting 16 public cemeteries in Bucharest," the director of the bureau of cemeteries, George Georgescu, told AFP.

Although the number of public watchmen was doubled to about 600, "no profanation or any other incident" that could have been attributed to Satanist groups was recorded Monday night, Georgescu said Tuesday. "We remain vigilant because we have faced acts of vandalism in the past, in which a dozen crosses in two Bucharest cemeteries were knocked over in a single night," he said.

Similar measures were adopted in other Romanian towns and according to the media some priests will be holding special masses to "fight off Satan".
