How do I get mildew smell out of shoes?

I've got a few pairs of shoes that got a musty/mildewy smell from being stored in our basement that I'd love for my son to wear. I tried spraying the insides with lysol and sitting them outside for the day but that didn't work. Anyone know how I can get rid of that smell?

    I have the solution....
have your cat or dog pee on them , then buy something to get that smell out! it is easier than the mildew smell.
    its a joke hahahha

but really, try oxyclean, i have used it on may things!!

If you can't wash them then rub them down with baking soday. You know that stuff we all put in the fridge to take out the oders. It works great in the laundry also. My sons and DH can really stink in florida heat. DH works outside. Baking soda takes the oder out not just covering it up. Baking soda also will whiten the clothes. I go and buy the real big box at walmart and use it for everything. Run out of deodorant foot powder it works great and much much cheaper. good luck

I'd stuff them with newspapers. Change the paper out everyday for a couple of days. And try leaving them in the sunshine. That should help.

Newspaper will absorb the smell. The sunshine is a great idea too...but spray the inside of your shoes with lemon juice and leave it in the sunshine. It that doesn't work, mix half water and half bleach and spray it in the shoes and leave in the sun.

Lemon juice and sunshine take out mildew.
Bleach water and sunshine help with smells and mildew.

Hope that Helps....My mom wrote a book on getting things clean.

I have all sorts of stupid tips.

Use coffee. It will take out the odors. I like to use coffee pods, less mess. Works great for those BO odors too! I raised 3 teen boys and a truck driver husband, this never failed.

I used scented cat litter that had baking soda in it and it worked for DS smelly work shoes, he gets his feet wet sometimes and they can really smell. I just got some knee high stockings from the dollar store, put the cat litter in and tied up the top. Put it in the sneakers and left it for a couple of days and the smell was completely gone.

Spray them with Odoban. This stuff really does work!
