Question Can I put my chest type freezer in my garage?

I want it out of my kitchen and was wondering if it would be ok to put it in the garage. Would the heat during the summer or the cold during the winter harm it in any way? TIA!

Yes, I had one for years on my back porch. Now that we moved it is going in the shed.

Re: Can I put my chest type freezer in my garage?

Tasha...just bear in mind that the freezer will have to work harder to keep things cool in a hot garage and will cost more to run. Also you are taking more of a chance of it breaking down and being hopt weather will not give you much time before you have losses. I only tell you this because it happedned to me...twice...before I keep them INSIDE now. If you must have it in the heat make sure it has room around it to "breathe". Do not stack stuff on it or around it and it will help.

    Refrigerator & Freezer Tips

Like other appliances that heat and cool, refrigerators are big energy users. If your refrigerator door does not shut tightly, check the door seal to see if it needs to be cleaned or replaced. A door leak allows cool air to escape, forcing your refrigerator to use more energy to keep food cold.

Cleaning the condenser coils found in the back or bottom of the refrigerator will maximize its efficiency. A brush or vacuum can be used. Be sure to unplug the refrigerator before you start cleaning.

Keep the refrigerator away from heating appliances (ovens and dishwashers, windows, and heating ducts. Direct exposure to heat forces the unit to work harder and use more energy. If you have a freezer or refrigerator in your garage, remember that the garage is not cooled and it will run more to keep cool.
When purchasing a new refrigerator consider a high efficiency model. Compare yellow Energy Guide labels and choose the unit that uses the least amount of electricity.

By keeping the freezer compartment full, you will increase its efficiency. Be careful not to block the fan that allows cold air to circulate.

Although automatic defrost refrigerators are convenient, their defrosting features use a lot of electricity. A manual defrost refrigerator typically uses 36% less energy.

Check temperature settings for the most efficient appliance operation. Refrigerator temperature should be 36-38 degrees and freezer temperature should be 0-5 degrees.

Re: Can I put my chest type freezer in my garage?

We have a freezer and a fridge in our garge and they do fine They do run more like DBF said, but ours don't run too much more.... and our garage gets HOT in the Oklahoma heat. We fill up empty 2 liter bottle 1/2 full of water and line the bottom of the freezer. That way that extra ice on the bottom keeps everything else nice and frozen (plus if there is a power outage, that ice will help keep everything cold longer lol)

The only thing different ours does in the summer is that ice tends to build up around the top (its a chest freezer) so every 4 or 5 weeks we have to go chip it off so that the door seals properly

Re: Can I put my chest type freezer in my garage?

Also while we are on the subject of freezers. Avoid buying upright freezers. I have a real nice one that I bought new from Sears and when the ice storm came several years ago, we were without power for 2 weeks. I lost everything in my freezer so I never turned it back on after the power came back on. I was glad I didn't now because my electric bill dropped at least $60 a month. This upright freezer I had was in the house and rarely ever opened. They are energy hogs. So now it's being used as a very expensive storage closet. LOL

I went and bought a new chest freezer this winter at Sears. One of the smaller types that isn't self defrosting. I can't even tell a difference in my electric bill with it.

Re: Can I put my chest type freezer in my garage?

Thanks yall. My house is about as hot as it is outside most of the time anyway, so I moved it out into the garage this evening. We just got another a/c unit though, so maybe we can actually be cool this summer. lol

We also have a fridge out there because we bought a new one in Feb. and the one we had was fine, so we put it out in the garage to store pop and extra food in. I just wasn't sure about the freezer though.

Re: Can I put my chest type freezer in my garage?

Tasha, possibly on really hot days you could have a fun running on the back of the freezer, on the coil thingies??? Just a thought. I am glad that you will have more room know, we all need more room. We had a stand up freezer in our garage and it didn't seem to be a problem. I didn't really pay attention to the electric bill, so it might have made it cost more, just don't know.
