Cardinal Ratzinger of Germany Is New Pope

13 minutes ago Europe - AP

By WILLIAM J. KOLE, Associated Press Writer

VATICAN CITY - Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger of Germany, a hard-line guardian of conservative doctrine, was elected the new pope Tuesday evening in the first conclave of the new millennium. He chose the name Pope Benedict XVI and called himself "a simple, humble worker."

Ratzinger, the first German pope since the 11th century, emerged onto the balcony of St. Peter's Basilica, where he waved to a wildly cheering crowd of tens of thousands and gave his first blessing as pope. Other cardinals clad in their crimson robes came out on other balconies to watch him.

"Dear brothers and sisters, after the great Pope John Paul II, the cardinals have elected me — a simple, humble worker in the vineyard of the Lord," he said. "I entrust myself to your prayers," the pope said.

The crowd responded by chanting "Benedict! Benedict!"

Ratzinger served John Paul II since 1981 as head of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. In that position, he has disciplined church dissidents and upheld church policy against attempts by liberals for reforms. He turned 78 on Saturday.

The new pope had gone into the conclave with the most buzz among two dozen leading candidates. He had impressed many faithful with his stirring homily at the funeral of John Paul II, who died April 2 at age 84.

My question is...With the newly elected Pope being 78 years old, how long before the Catholic Church goes through the process all over again? When John Paul was elected he was what the third Pope elected within a month? Seemed every week or so the man elected Pope died and the Cardinals had to go through it all again.

Good point. Popes are like buses. You fill in the rest.

Shelf life...LOL! Maybe they should have elected a twinkie. I was half hoping for the black guy from South Africa. What are the possibilities of getting a transgender Pope? Kind of like if Benny Hill was a Cardinal.

Perhaps there is some truth to the rumors that he will be the last Pope. Can't see the Catholic Church not having a Pope. Besides what would happen to the Vatican?

I think the only reason he got the job was because he was the faithful servant of John Paul. With his record, I'm not too impressed. Especially the Hitler Youth thing. I don't care how long it was for, it was still wrong.
But then again, he is 78, so like they say. Popes are like buses...

John Paul II was one of the youngest Popes ( 58 ) - the Cardinals wanted an older man so that he would not have as long a ponticate. John Paul II was a great Pope -- but 26 years is a LONG time to have one man at the helm.

Yeah but with an 84 year old Pope how will he look to the younger generation? It's pretty big gap.
