ET learned on Wednesday that one of Hollywood's hottest couples, CHARLIE SHEEN and his wife of nearly three years, DENISE RICHARDS, have decided to call it quits.

It was Denise who filed for divorce on Wednesday in Los Angeles, citing "irreconcilable differences" as the reason for the split. According to the papers, Denise has petitioned for custody of their baby daughter SAM, who will celebrate her first birthday next week. Denise is also six months pregnant with their second child and she's also asking for sole custody of the baby due in June.
In a joint statement released today, the couple said: "We are deeply saddened by the recent events and out of our love and concern for our daughter Sam, our unborn child and each other, we ask that you respect our privacy at this difficult time."
Although there's been no specific reason given for the divide, a source tells ET that Charlie, 39, and Denise, 34, may have a "no cheat" clause in their reported prenuptial agreement and that Denise wants Charlie to pay spousal support, as well as attorney's fees. She's also asking for miscellaneous jewelry and other personal effects.
The date of separation is listed as "still yet to be determined," but there were no signs of trouble when ET saw the couple at last month's SAG Awards, their final public appearance together.
The twosome first met in 2000 on the set of the HBO movie 'Good Advice' and their romance blossomed when the Bond girl made a guest appearance on Charlie's sitcom "Spin City." The pair last worked side by side when Denise, as well as their baby daughter, appeared on Charlie's current hit show "Two and a Half Men."
"Immediately, since the day she was born, he just melted when he held her," Denise told ET last fall of Charlie with Sam. "He's so good with her. He's such a good dad, so hands on."
Meanwhile, Denise is working on a deal for an upcoming series with UPN and Charlie is still riding high with the success of his CBS sitcom.
