Tina (aka Fishmansbetrhalf) HELP
I have a friend who has a fish tank. She has different breeds. The 2 fish in question (one is a Rosey Barb, the other she believes is a Black Lyretail Molly) She recently had 4 fish die in a couple days period. The Barb she found out is suppose to be agressive(she noticed it swims all over the place--very hyperactive) this fish has never even went after another of the other tank mates. The Molly she has seen chasing some of the other fish. She read that mollies are very companionable with their tank mates, and are not aggressive. Tonight she saw the Molly attacking (nipping at) a couple of the other fish. Can this happen? Is her Molly really being aggressive, while the barb is docile? and is there a chance that her Molly isn't a Molly? This particular fish has a wide, flat mouth,(looks kinda like a catfishes mouth, without the wisker, is that a characteristic of a molly?) the fins and tail look right, but she said she hasn't seen a good pic online of the mouth of a black molly. If not a Molly, what could it be? She is sure she is going to have to separate it, so she doesn't lose more fish. What would you do?

Re: Tina (aka Fishmansbetrhalf) HELP
I have a 55 gallon community tank with all sorts of mollys, plattys, guppies, sharks etc. I have had NO problem with the molly's being agressive what so ever but I think it all depends on the individual fish. Here is a link with lots of different mollys http://www.jackspets.com/freshwatermolly.htm

Re: Tina (aka Fishmansbetrhalf) HELP
Sometimes it depends on the fish. I used to raise Oranda Goldfish and they are usually VERY docile but I've had a few who were just bullies and I had to remove them form the tank.

Re: Tina (aka Fishmansbetrhalf) HELP
This one is a Black lyretail Molly. It also happens to be a male (if what I have read is correct, and if pics are anything to go by, lol)

Re: Tina (aka Fishmansbetrhalf) HELP
I don't know much about the Mollies, but when my male goldfish are looking to mate, they chase the females around some, bump them, kinda nip at them, but I haven't had one hurt from him doing it tho.
Maybe she could isolate it for a few days, and keep a watch on the barb and see if any bullying is still going on. Maybe she could tell which one it was that way?

Re: Tina (aka Fishmansbetrhalf) HELP
I hope so. I feel kinda bad for her, she came to me for help, but I can't offer her much except for what I have found online. Now if she had a bird problem... LOL, THAT I can help with. Fish are just not something I have ever really gotten into. Luckily she has separated the Molly, and hopes things go better (she only has the one, so she isn't sure if it is a mating thing) One of the fish that it attacked this evening has since died. She is just about possitive the Molly is the bad one. All the Barb does is swim laps really fast, lol, she says that is one hyper dude, all it does is zip here and there all day, and doesn't seem to bother anyone (at least not when she is watching them). It is a real loner.
Thanks for the advice.
