Question Question about same sex marriages

Okay, before I start, let me say....I don't want ANY opinions at all. I am only interested in someone helping me with some facts...meaning NO STINKING OPINIONS lol.

Now, I'm in a debate at school. It's college level government, and will be done before the division president. We are arguing for and against the Federal Marriage Amendment. I'm against it. Sooo, I'm looking for something that totally lays out what this amendment will do. All aspects of it. I've found a few sites, but they are all opinion and petitions. I want to know exactly what it will be calling for and what rights it will be denying. Anyone know of a site?

Second, I know that a Civil Union and the rights that go with that union are what's being given in the states that allow them. Is there a site that outlines what is being asked in these civil unions? I mean, stuff other than spousal rights, inheritance etc? I'm not sure I'm saying it right. I think there was a site posted a while back in some of the same sex fight threads unfortunately, the wonderful BBS servers makes it almost impossible for me to find *cries*.

I just want to know both sides front and back, that way when they think they have a good point...I can slam em back down and get my extra credit points

TIA if any of ya'll know of sites that list this stuff.

Here is an article from when it was first proposed
    http://www.washtimes.com/national/20...5459-1812r.htm

here is a site that has the full proposed amendment

    http://www.allianceformarriage.org/r.../amendment.htm

Here's Vermont's page on civil unions
    http://www.sec.state.vt.us/otherprg/...vilunions.html

and this is just something that I found funny which I got here
    http://grove.ufl.edu/~ggsa/gaymarriage.html

Why gay people should NOT be allowed to get married
12 reasons why gay people should not be allowed to get married

    1. Homosexuality is not natural, much like eyeglasses, polyester, and birth control. (You just imagined the penguins. Anyway, penguins are unnatural: they're birds, they fly underwater. Nuff said.)

    2. Heterosexual marriages are valid because they produce children. Infertile couples and old people can't legally get married because the world needs more children.

    3. Obviously, gay parents will raise gay children, since straight parents only raise straight children.

    4. Straight marriage will be less meaningful if Gay marriage is allowed, since Britney Spears' 55-hour just-for-fun marriage was meaningful.

    5. Heterosexual marriage has been around a long time and hasn't changed at all; women are property, blacks can't marry whites, and divorce is illegal.

    6. Gay marriage should be decided by people, not the courts, because the majority-elected legislatures, not courts, have historically protected the rights of the minorities.

    7. Gay marriage is not supported by religion. In a theocracy like ours, the values of one religion are imposed on the entire country. That's why we have only one religion in America.

    8. Gay marriage will encourage people to be gay, in the same way that hanging around tall people will make you tall.

    9. Legalizing gay marriage will open the door to all kinds of crazy behavior. People may even wish to marry their pets because a dog has legal standing and can sign a marriage contract.

    10. Children can never succeed without a male and a female role model at home. That's why single parents are forbidden to raise children.

    11. Gay marriage will change the foundation of society. Heterosexual marriage has been around for a long time, and we could never adapt to new social norms because we haven't adapted to things like cars or a longer lifespan.

    12. Civil unions, providing most of the same benefits as marriage with a different name are better, because a "separate but equal" institution is always constitutional. Separate schools for African-Americans worked just as well as separate marriages for gays and lesbians will.

    Hope that helps.

Thanks!! You all were a great help...well, except Angel LMAO. I got some stuff off the religous tolerance site. The alliance for marriage was the other one. I was thinking there was more to the amendment than that, so I was sure I was missing something

I'll start checking out the other links. I think I'll be printing out those from the last link too Legion That should stir em up

That's the stand I'm taking on my arguement Evrita. They don't have to call it a marriage if they don't want to, but the amendment would take away any chances of civil unions being legal and therefore they would lose rights involving healthcare, inheritances, pretty much anything if one was to die and the family wanted to step in and be jerks about it. That's why I was asking about exactly what the amendment would do, and what the homosexual community wanted as rights etc.
