Burned plastic - How do I get rid of the smell??

I am a complete dunce. I admit it. We have a VERY small kitchen and little storage space. As a result, I had some pots & plastic containers (I won't ever do that again!) stored in the oven. Well, I forgot they were in there and turned on the oven to preheat for tonight's dinner. Well, about 1/2 hour later I get a whiff of this nasty plastic burning smell. I turn to look at the oven and and see smoke pouring out of it. I turned it off immediately. Then I opened the oven and there is plastic melted all over the pots/lids/racks, etc. and a small pool of it on the bottom of the oven is on fire! Of course by now the smoke alarm is going off and I'm grabbing the baking soda to put the fire out. Luckily it went right out. And as soon as the plastic cooled and hardened I was able to get it off of everything (3 Farberware lids, 1 small Farberware pot, 2 Visions lids and 1 small Visions pot and a baking sheet, which thankfully caught most of the plastic).

The problem now is getting rid of the NASTY smell of burned plastic before he gets home! I can't spray anything like air freshener to get rid of it because he dislikes even that. Does anyone know how I can quickly clear the air and get rid of the nasty smell?

Thanks in advance...any suggestions will be appreciated!

I wish I had advice... I did the same thing about a year ago and I have scrubbed and scrubbed and we STILL smell it every time we turn the oven on! I hope someone answers for you!

A YEAR AGO?!? Oh no, I'm doomed for sure. He's gonna have a major fit when he gets home and smells it. I sure hope someone has an idea.

But on a happier note, I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one who's done it - you just made me feel lots better, justme 23!! Thanks for responding and cheering me up a bit.

My suggestion: Leave home, find a new place to live, or burn the old place down. Joking. Use an oven safe dish and make some baking soda/water mixture in put on an oven shelf. Turn oven on very low 200-250 for many hours. Might help. Has helped me before. Otherwise hit Google or Ask Jeeves and search. Surely you will come up will some kind of solutions. Good luck.

Wish I knew. DH works in a plastics plant and comes home smelling like burnt plastic. The smell never washes out of his work clothes.

Thanks, nanajoanie - I hadn't thought of trying Ask Jeeves or google! I just put a glass baking dish of baking soda & water (I sprinkled in a little cinnamon too) in the oven and it smells better already.

fatesfaery, I feel for you! It's a nasty smell for sure and to have it around all the time would make me nuts. Have you tried oxyclean or a good smelling fabric softener?
