Wedding Folklore

Some people believed that the wedding ceremony shold be completed between the half hour and the hour. The clock hand rising towards the hour, signified success and rising fortune.

The engagement ring was originally given as partial payment for the bride, as a symbol of the groom's intentions.

In medieval Italy, diamonds were used in engagement rings to symbolize enduring love; in Egypt, the circular shape meant unending love and commitment.

Traditionally, the Greek bride wears the wedding ring on her left hand until the ceremony, when it is moved to her right hand.

Ancient Greek and Roman veils were flame red, while early Christians chose white or purple.

White wedding gowns became popular when Anne of Brittany married Louis XII.

A new penny should be worn in the left shoe to assure wealth.

The Romans carried bouquets of garlic, chive, and other herbs to symbolize fertility and drive away evil sprits.

Ivy in a wedding bouquet, assures good luck, lilies signify purity, apple blossoms, better things to come, and myrtle is supposed to bring good luck.

Historically, bridesmaids and ushers dressed like the bride and groom to confuse evil spirits.

In some traditions, an unmarried bridesmaid would sleep on a piece of wedding cake to dream of who she will marry.

In medieval England, guests brought a small cake to the wedding and they were placed on top of each other. The bride and groom had to kiss over this stack of cakes to ensure many healthy children.

An old custom relates that part of the wedding cake from the first wedding in a family, must be kept in the house until all the daughters are married.

The Victorian's assured brides that if they married on the same day of the week that the groom was born, it was good luck.
