I responed to your other thread but wanted to add that granite is very durable and beautiful but if you pick a light color, can stain easily because they are very porous. They do add beauty and value to your home. Good luck.
I love work. I could stare at it all day.

We have a solid black granite dining room table top, as well as a couple of end tables that my husband made for us back in his stone mason days that have never been sealed. If you buy top quality, highly polished granite, you should not have to worry too much about how porous it is in its natural state. The darker the better of course, but if you go for quality, you will get what you pay for. Think gravestones. Those are highly polished, not sealed and they weather very well, no? They are exposed to harsher elements than you will find in your kitchen.
The major con of granite is the COST. Both materials and labor.

Costwise, in our town Corian solid countertops and Granite stone tops cost about the same.

Granite countertops tops are very porous and require sealing. Stone shops will tell you that this is not true, but do the research of the stone industry and you will find that that it does require sealing to keep it from staining and to keep bacteria out. Granite is also not approved with the FDA. Granite cannot be repair very easliy either. I had a friend droop a jar of pickles on hers and it cracked the countertop and it looked like a spider web. She could not get it repaired, it had to be replaced.

pro: smooth stone tops are EXCELLENT for rolling out dough and making your own pastas, pies, etc.
con: extremely expensive, and if they crack, you can't just seal the crack, you need to replace the whole thing.

LOL! I am guessing that 5 years later she already remodeled her kitchen in whatever she chose.
I love my granite. Cost me a small fortune, but it is sealed and not porous at all. All that you can harm it with is bleach. Maybe things changed in 5 years but after mine was installed, they gave me a hammer and said here, hit it. I was like are ya nuts? They insisted and I did and nary a scratch etc.
