How to Look Thinner Without Dieting
Dieting is really hard work.
Sometimes, it's too hard.
So if skipping dessert and running three miles after work are just too much trouble, try these tricks from the Chicago Sun-Times to look thinner.
Suck In Your Stomach
This is the classic way to make your tummy smaller, practiced by girls and women throughout the ages. Guess what? Sucking it in is also good exercise. "Suck and release while you're sitting around. It's like clenching your butt cheeks," Gina Pia Cooper, editor-in-chief of FashionFinds.com told Sun-Times reporter Paige Wiser. There is one drawback: You can't do it all the time. "It's too much to think about," says Cooper.
Sit Up Straight
So Mom was right. Sit up straight and you'll look thinner. Really. Good posture will naturally flatten your tummy and help your clothes fit better on your body.
Wear Tailored Clothes
This one is for the rich kids. If you can afford it, personally tailored clothes can really make you look thin. The first step is to find the right seamstress. Then bring her the clothes that are currently hanging in your closet and have her re-cut them to fit you in the most flattering way possible.
Get a Great "Fat Outfit"
"Fat outfits"--the ones that make you look great no matter how bloated you feel--really do exist. The hard part is finding one. No store will have a big sign that says "fat outfits." (Drat.) But here's an idea from Sharon Haver, a New York stylist who founded FocusOnStyle.com: Get a black, cashmere, oversized V-neck sweater.
Black Power
"Never underestimate the power of black," says Wiser. Dressing in monochromatic black will make you look thinner as it disguises the lumps. Warning: It could just make you look like a widow. So if black isn't your style, try light red. The idea is to go with a single color.
Big Hair
Hey, it works for actress Delta Burke. It can work for you. Haver just advises you not to go overboard. "Your hair, your shoes, your accessories, should all be in proportion to your body shape," she told the Sun-Times. "For instance, a large woman with close-cropped hair will look like a pinhead."
Tricks for the Truly Desperate
--Stand at a three-quarter angle, with one leg in front of the other so most of your weight is behind you.
Drawback: You can't move.
--Recline.
Drawback: You can't sit up.
--Wear a girdle.
Drawback: Are you kidding?
--Surround yourself with people who are heavier than you.
Drawback: This is friendship?
