Sarah lives in an upscale, professional area of St. Louis city. The Central West End. Professionals, doctors, lawyers, grad students, med students. Washington University, huge hospital complexes.
She has a 3rd floor apartment on a corner of 2 busy streets. She's getting ready for clinicals this morning and glances out her bedroom window (it faces her front street) Sees 2 'kids' messing with a car. Goes back to getting ready and it dawns on her that it's HER car they're messing with. They're trying to break into it. She calls 911, tells them someone is breaking into my car. She bangs on the window, shakes her fist at them and yells. They take off, she calls 911 again and tells them which direction they are going. Cops come, catch the thugs. Neighbor across the street (male, mid-50's) is out on his balcony drinking coffee, sees and also calls 911. The cops ask Sarah to come downstairs and id them. She's like, "Sorry, but I really don't want to do that face to face. That's not a real bright idea." So one cop detains the kids on the street, the neighbor (witness) and 2 cops come upstairs to Sarah's apartment. They go into her bedroom and have them id the suspects from the window. Sarah's mortified. She's a slob basically. Is apologizing for the mess in her bedroom saying, "My mom will KILL me when she finds out you guys were in here!"
So, id's are made. Thugs are taken away.
You have to know Sarah. She's a lot like her mother. She said if she hadn't been wrapped in a bath towel she would have gone downstairs and thumped those 2 kids.
Only Sarah. The cops and neighbors reassured her of the 'safeness' of the neighborhood. We've never had any reservations about her living there. Her neighbor said he'd been in the area 23 years and other than an occassional purse-snatching or bout of graffiti, the area is extremely quiet.
She's just a little concerned now though, that these thugs or their friends might be watching her, her apartment or her car. I feel VERY sorry for them if they are because she'll whoop the living daylights out of them if they mess with her.
HOW STUPID though? At 7:30 in the morning. On any given day, at any given time there are walkers, joggers, people going to work. 30 people easily strolling her street, heading to Einstein's for a bagel or the Majestic for breakfast. So, hey, on our way to school, let's stop here, pick this old car and see if we can steal it, no one will see us.
