What's the difference in HIVES and SCABIES?

In January, my doctor put me on Provera for 10 days, and on my 10th day of taking it I broke out in, what I thought to be hives, for the first time in my life. Of course I stopped taking it, but the itching never went away and is unbearable. So far the only thing that has calmed them down is Prednisone, in which my doctor doesn't want me to take for long periods of time due to side effects. I found a support group online and one person said his homeopath put him on something with arnica. I went to my local natural healing store and spoke with the lady there. She suggested I use a product to cleanse my liver to rid my body of the Provera. I also got some arnica and have been unsuccessful with both so far.

The information I have been finding about hives is that people will have 'lesions' in places on their body, mostly lips and eyes. I have had a couple of bad itchy spots on my arms, never on the face, but mostly my entire body itches insanely! I got into scratching 'fits' and have even scratched off a mole on my back in my sleep.

Lately, my husband's legs and arms are itching him. Note: hives are said to NOT be contagious b/c they are an allergy. He mentioned that we were around some kids about the time I broke out, and they could've had scabies.

I have found this information about hives ad this about scabies

The symptoms are very similar so I'm not sure what I have I recently lost my job and benefits as well, so I will have to go to the Health Dept to get checked out.

Sorry for the long post, but I was hoping to get some good advice, or maybe pray for me. I'm desperate for some answers/help/hope/healing

TIA

I feel your pain although i had something different. I had what the dermatologist called an overgrowth of flora due to my immune system being compromised (like fighting a cold), plus I think the prescription I was on. Anyway, my hands itched like mad!!! I had blisters all over and it was awful. Ended up with a script and wearing 100% cotton gloves over it. I know they told me cetaphil lotion as it has no harsh additives to worsen the itching and does sooth somewhat. I did get a script for some kickbutt lotion that soooo helped the itching, but I cannot for the life of me find the tube.

AHA good old rxlist.com had it, it was:

Brand Name: DIPROLENE DIPROLENE Patient Info CheckRx!
Generic Name: BETAMETHASONE DIPROPRIONATE
• Betamethasone is a topical steroid. It reduces or inhibits the actions of chemicals in the body that cause inflammation, redness, and swelling.
• Betamethasone topical is used to treat inflammation caused by a number of conditions such as allergic reactions, eczema, and psoriasis.
• Betamethasone topical may also be used for purposes other than those listed in this medication guide.

I'm not sure if it would work in your case. I guess it all depends what it is for sure. I'm wondering if lotrimin AF would do the trick for you.

What is clotrimazole topical?
• Clotrimazole topical is an antifungal medication. Clotrimazole topical prevents fungus from growing on your skin.
• Clotrimazole topical is used to treat skin infections such as athlete's foot, jock itch, ringworm, and yeast infections.
• Clotrimazole topical may also be used for purposes other than those listed in this medication guide.

I've probably been no help, but feel for you and hope youfind something to treat it soon. I would assume there is probably a cream for scabies or hives over the counter, but not sure. You can call a pharmacy and just ask if they carry any lotions for either of those.

actually, that was very helpful. I think I will ask my pharmacist for some of the Betamethasone or something like it. I read some about it and it is more potent than Prednisone. What was the name of the script that cleared you up?

ummm... not to totally gross you out, but scabies are basically little bugs.
Quote:
Attracted to warmth and odor, the female mite burrows into the skin, lays eggs, and produces secretions that cause allergic reactions. Larvae, or newly hatched mites, travel to the skin surface, lying in shallow pockets where they will develop into adult mites.
My mom had scabies. They are tiny little bugs that burrow & live & lay eggs & hatch larvae under your skin, and they can travel around under the skin to get to the warm places that they like to be. Its really quite gross. I refused to go to my mom's house the entire time she had them, but to make up for that she told me ALL about it when I would call her. They are VERY easily contagious (sp?). I think what she ended up using was something she called a pesticide soap to get rid of them, but had to do it a few times and take out & wash & sterilize all their linens.

I will hope for you that its not scabies!

Chiggers can do the same thing. Hubby gets those since he works in the woods as a park ranger.

Been there and done that with Scabies.

I worked for the local hospital at the time doing Stress tests. I woke up one morning and inbetween my fingers ithces. I was 8 months prego and just thought it was from my hands being swollen. Went to work and one of the other technicians I worked with was complaining of the same thing. In walked our Dr who also happens to be a very good friend. She took one look at us and said get out of here you have scabies. They sent us to the Hospital clinic and they gave us a prescription for this lotion stuff.
You have to take a hot shower right before you go to bed. Cover yourself in this lotion from your toes ( and inbetween them) all the way up to your chin and your hairline in back. Hubby had to do it too since we slept together. My Mom kept my then 3 year old and did it to him just in case but we didn't want him near me. When you wake up in the morning. You have to strip your bed entirly. Even your pillows have to be washed. Then you have to take a hot shower and scrub yourself. We even gave the dogs a bath in the morning since they can get them too.
It was totally gross and Hubby was going to kill me. I caught it from a patient. I have even caught pink eye from them. Hubby is very glad I work from home now and can't "bring" anything home.

I sure hope we dont end up with it, I hate being itchy lol. But anyway, our doc said he has some pesticide soap stuff for it. I hope you get whatever it is taken care of soon.

i have been comparing my symptoms to both hives and scabies. It just so happened that I started itching after 10 days of taking Provera, which hives is a side effect of.

I itch everywhere, not just where I have a "breakout", and to be honest, I think I'd rather have scabies than hives. Reason: scabies is curable. hives is harder to detect the culprit and to get rid of it. For instance, I stopped taking the Provera 2 months ago, so the hives should be gone by now. But I'm still itching. My Prednisone's about to run out and I'm starting to sweat it. Also, the fact that my husband is breaking out, even though hives aren't contagious is another reason I think it could be scabies

That information was very helpful mlathroum. I will do all of that if they give me treatments for scabies. But if it's not scabies, and I do have hives, I will try the hydroxyzine - sounds like it works!

I'm sure the doctor has told you this, but just in case he didn't use Benedryl or generic Benedryl. I get hives all the time and I've had scabies. There really isn't much you can do about the itching, but Benedryl will give you some relief.

I would think that if it were an allergic reaction it wouldn't last two months. Scabies is possible. When I had them they were gone within days with medication soap stuff.

Regardless, maybe you need a second opinion. It could be something different.

I hope you feel better soon. I know how bad it is. Take the benedryl and hopefully you will sleep better.

Good Luck!

I have been taking Benadryl since day one, but only at night because it causes drowsiness. But during the day I am miserable. I went ahead and scheduled an appointment with a dermatologist (I'm sure it will be expensive, but I need answers) Thanks for all the good advice
